Tekken Producer Says a Retro Collection is Unlikely, Citing Ugly Polygons
As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing Katsuhiro Harada’s words about a potential Tekken retro collection. Growing up, the early Tekken games were more than just pixels and polygons to us; they were part of our gaming DNA.
Katsuhiro Harada, the producer of the Tekken series, has hinted at the prospect of a Tekken retro compilation. However, he finds it improbable for this to materialize.
When speaking with TheGamer, Harada was queried if we could anticipate a compilation of Tekken games similar to the recently released Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
Harada said:
2D fighting games have a unique aspect as players who prefer 3D fighting games often gravitate towards the most recent versions of 3D titles.
From the get-go, polygon characters were pioneering in terms of graphics, truly pushing boundaries back then. However, over time, they may not appear as striking or innovative as they initially did.
2D fighting games appear to maintain their graphic quality over time due to the use of sprites. However, this lack of significant graphical evolution isn’t the primary factor that drew players in the beginning.
It’s a bit disappointing, really, as early polygonal games possess a unique, jagged, and somewhat unstable charm. I’ve never found them unattractive; instead, they are quirky, angular, ornate objects that stir emotions in a way entirely different from 2D sprites.
In his own words, Michael Murray, who oversees the Tekken project, mentioned that he wouldn’t typically spend long periods battling with Tekken 3 against friends using the 3D characters. He emphasized that there is a noticeable distinction between 3D and 2D fighters in this regard.
