ABC calls out Tony Armstrong for ‘moonlighting’ as his new venture is revealed following his shock departure
As a dedicated follower of Tony Armstrong‘s career, I find myself both intrigued and disheartened by recent events unfolding in his professional life. On one hand, I admire his ambition and versatility, having graced our screens on ABC News Breakfast for three years and now stepping into the voiceover world for NRMA Insurance ads. It’s not often we see such a quick transition from morning news to insurance jingles!
The presenter, Tony Armstrong from ABC, found himself under scrutiny following the unveiling of his latest project.
Last week, the popular Australian television personality, aged 34, revealed that he would be departing from his position at ABC News Breakfast following a tenure of three years.
He is currently the speaker for NRMA Insurance commercials, although he doesn’t appear on screen, and these advertisements have aired on television since July.
On Monday during their program, ABC’s Media Watch team brought up the topic of Lance Armstrong’s latest job. Host Janine Perrett found it surprising that he didn’t secure the broadcaster’s approval prior to taking on this new position.
It’s unfortunate that his side job could potentially harm the credibility of ABC, as we are discussing during his last week on News Breakfast, according to Perrett.
She added: ‘Tony’s arguably one of the ABCs biggest stars.’
Apart from gracing the morning talk shows on television, he has also made an appearance on a late-night sports program, become prominent in ABC News advertisements for upcoming content, and stars as the lead personality in a brand-new five-part series.
‘So we were stunned when we got confirmation that Tony was selling an insurance company as well’.
According to ABC’s Editorial Policy, while work undertaken by prominent broadcasters outside the network isn’t strictly forbidden, it is categorized as carrying a significant level of risk.
ABC stated that the voiceover was carried out unknowingly, resulting from a misunderstanding between them and Tony’s external representative.
The announcer stated that each ABC employee has received a copy of the exterior project rules and was emphasized that these guidelines must be met. Notably, Tony is a highly valued employee who has the complete backing of the company.
A stunned Perrett responded: ‘A misunderstanding?’
It’s hard for us to comprehend how an ABC reporter might endorse a major Australian brand without recognizing a potential conflict of interest.
If your actions do not violate the rules regarding outside assignments that require prior authorization, then it’s hard to imagine what could possibly be considered a breach.
Media Watch said Armstrong did not responded to its request for comment.
Armstrong announced he is leaving his role with ABC News Breakfast last week after three years.
In a touching declaration, he announced that his final performance is scheduled for October 4, expressing his optimism that he might reappear as a special guest at some point.
‘I’ve been pretty nervous about doing this,’ Tony confirmed.
‘I’ve retired from News Brekkie and my last day will be October 4.
He expressed his gratitude towards everyone involved – his coworkers, those working behind the scenes, the producers, and even the viewers who acknowledge him on the street.
Over the past three years, it seems more like a turbulent ride than anything else, with so many changes happening, I feel as though I’ve been traveling at warp speed. However, the backing I’ve received from News Brekkie and the media world in general has been nothing short of incredible.
I really appreciate it! I’m going to find it hard to adjust without my comfortable couch – I won’t miss the alarm though, but I will definitely miss the good times we’ve shared on that couch.
