Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen episode 8 finale spoilers follow.
If you’ve been on Netflix recently, you probably saw that a new horror series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, just released with eight scary episodes.
Haley Z. Boston created this series, which stars Camila Morrone as Rachel, who is getting ready to marry Nicky (played by Adam DiMarco). As the wedding approaches, strange events begin to occur, leading Rachel to question if getting married is the right decision for her.

As the season ends, it’s clear that Rachel isn’t as worried about family drama or bad history as she is about marrying someone she doesn’t truly connect with – her biggest fear is ending up with the wrong person.
This inner conflict plays out through familiar story elements. Rachel is revealed to be under a long-standing curse, which strongly motivates her to get married, as marriage either protects her or keeps Nicky’s family safe.
What does this curse entail?

Rachel is under a curse: she must marry the man she truly believes is her soulmate before sunset on her wedding day, or she will die. If she doesn’t marry anyone, the curse will instead fall upon her fiancé’s family.

Now that we understand some of the established rules of this world, a problem arises: Nicky starts to question whether Rachel is the right person for him, and this personal doubt makes the situation even more complicated.
Rachel is stuck in a difficult situation. She understands that Nicky’s beliefs could threaten his family, now and in the future. But because he doesn’t accept her warnings about a curse, she finds herself drifting away from him.
Morrone told Tudum that this realization is incredibly painful for her character. She feels utterly betrayed, realizing he’s never truly listened or understood her, and that he’s treated her like a complete stranger.
What happens on the wedding day?

This brings us to the wedding day itself. Nicky, deeply conflicted, decides to call off the wedding, accidentally sending invitations to some family members in the process. Rachel, wanting to save his family from embarrassment, selflessly tries to go through with the marriage anyway, but it doesn’t work.
She no longer loved Nicky by her wedding day, and tragically died right after. However, she was unexpectedly reborn as The Witness, and now must helplessly watch as Nicky’s family might make choices that lead to their own destruction.
After the horrifying events, Rachel meets Nicky one last time. He’s found holding a teddy bear, deeply traumatized after witnessing the curse destroy his family. According to DiMarco, Nicky is completely shut down with fear.
After years of heartache, Rachel is now largely unaffected by her ex’s emotions. Boston shared that this was a deliberate decision, with the show wanting Rachel to concentrate on dealing with the immediate circumstances.
The show centers around a couple splitting up and the immediate aftermath. According to the showrunner, it’s about dealing with the practicalities that follow a breakup. Rachel, at this point, is emotionally drained and simply wants to leave. They felt this was a fitting conclusion to the relationship.
Could Rachel find happiness as The Witness?

Rachel is destined to repeatedly attend weddings as a form of ongoing punishment, unless she can pass the curse on to someone else. However, the actor who plays her, Morrone, sees this as a positive thing, viewing it as a fresh start for her character.
The decision to have Rachel take over as lead in Boston came down to the wire. The show’s creator explained they considered all options, even dramatic ones like having Nicky die or preventing the marriage, before making a final choice.
I was really drawn to the idea of death and rebirth, and it felt right that the explanation would come from mythology,” she explained. She also noted that the new character, Rachel, would be much more understanding than the previous person in the role of The Witness.
She was determined to break the curse, and would explore every option to do so. She also wanted to prepare people so they wouldn’t face the same hardship. Morrone agreed, saying her character would focus on helping others and giving them a warning.
