As a long-time fan with memories of childhood spent giggling at the antics of Springfield’s favorite family, I must say that The Simpsons never cease to surprise me! Last night’s season premiere was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, leaving me confused, amused, and ultimately satisfied.
The Simpsons season 36 spoilers follow.
Last night, during the Season 36 premiere of The Simpsons (on September 29), viewers were left puzzled when late-night host and scriptwriter for “Marge vs the Monorail”, Conan O’Brien, announced it as the ‘ending of the series’.
Presenting what was suggested as the “final episode” of the series as the initial installment of a fresh season, without any preceding notice or anticipation beyond a cryptic hint, left viewers perplexed, leading them to share their puzzlement on social media platforms.
It was revealed that the episode was essentially a clever trick, as showrunner Matt Selman confessed to Variety that the team aimed to poke fun at finales that are overstuffed with nostalgic references and guest appearances, similar to what Inside No 9 did earlier this year.
The team playfully criticized generative AI by including an artificially intelligent character that produced tired and overused storylines for the final scene in the episode.
Eventually, Bart manages to halt the final episode from airing, allowing things to continue and him to remain the same age for eternity – a subtle jab at the series’ longstanding (for the most part) unchanging narrative timeline.
Additionally, there’s a jab aimed at the fans of the series itself, as Conan points out that from the initial airing in 1989, viewers have been expressing their disappointment that The Simpsons “wasn’t as amusing as it once was.
Although the series hasn’t been extended past the current season at this point, the implication is that the story won’t be wrapping up any time soon. This is suggested by the use of an instrumental version of the popular tune ‘They’ll Never Stop The Simpsons‘ during the end credits.
The Simpsons airs Sunday nights on FOX in the US. The show currently streams on Disney+ in the UK.
