Kris Kristofferson once confessed he ‘never thought’ he would ‘live past 30’ – before changing hard-partying ways

As I delve into the captivating story of Kris Kristofferson, a man who transcended the boundaries of music and acting, I can’t help but be moved by his extraordinary journey. A true testament to resilience, redemption, and the power of love, Kristofferson’s life is a beacon that shines brightly, guiding us through the twists and turns of our own lives.

Kris Kristofferson, known for his skills as a musician, songwriter, and actor, is being honored following his passing at his residence in Maui, Hawaii at the age of 88.

In my experience as a lifestyle guide, I’ve seen lives shaped by intriguing journeys. Mine included seven eventful decades filled with the thrill of music and the glamour of Hollywood. Yet, these very experiences seemed poised to curtail my story prematurely, as the allure of late-night revelries on tour and the charms of Tinsel Town threatened to overshadow the longevity of my career.

It turns out he was of the old-school premise that real artists live on the edge with their lifestyle choices, which includes the use of mind-altering substances like alcohol.  

1998 saw the Brownsville, Texas native expressing his viewpoint to People: “I believed that all truly talented artists were prone to self-destruction, and anyone who was really good at what they did would live life dangerously.

In the late 1970s, he experienced a sudden understanding or insight that led him to change his lifestyle, which was marked by excessive partying. This transformation occurred after watching the scene depicting his death in the initial remake of A Star Is Born (1978), where he portrayed a character mirroring his self-destructive phase, alongside co-star Barbara Streisand.

It is thought that Kristofferson, who was born as Kristoffer Kristofferson, significantly increased his alcohol consumption from the late 1960s to the 1970s.

At about the same period, he started a romance with the renowned blues-rock artist Janis Joplin, who was well-known for her heavy drinking and drug habits.

In his own words, referring to their relationship, the actor from ‘To Beat The Devil’ stated it was more than casual, yet he wasn’t sure about the term ‘love affair’. He admired her wit and humor. At that time, I was deeply into drinking, while she was battling addiction to heroin.

Janis Joplin, famed for her song “Piece of My Heart,” tragically succumbed to the effects of drug and alcohol abuse when she passed away in October 1970, at the tender age of 27.

Despite acknowledging that her death left him deeply affected, Kristofferson persisted with his heavy drinking, eventually identifying himself as a “functioning alcoholic.

He mentioned that for quite some time, his preferred beverage changed frequently between Jack Daniels, tequila, and a variety of other drinks. During his performances, he confessed that he found it difficult to envision himself taking the stage without having a drink first.

Over time, Kristofferson found himself at a critical juncture, realizing that his heavy drinking was no longer sustainable, following the portrayal of his character’s death as a self-destructive rock star, John Norman Howard, in the 1976 film A Star Is Born.

In a tragic moment, Streisand’s Esther Hoffman Howard character stands over Kristofferson (as John) in a field following a car accident involving alcohol, where he had been the driver.

He remarked, “That moment brought home to me how it could have been my own family weeping for me.” Regarding Streisand’s character, Esther Hoffman Howard, he stated. “That scene made me stop drinking and gave me a strong desire to live until my daughter reaches adulthood.

Just as numerous tales depict individuals experiencing a rise in their lives following sobriety, the nation’s singer found himself reaping the benefits of his lifestyle transformation when he met his future spouse, Lisa Meyers, in 1982.

After quitting alcohol, they quickly started a relationship and eventually had five more children together, adding up to a total of eight kids for the Heaven’s Gate actor, who already had three from past unions.

After leaving the army in 1965, Kristofferson moved to Nashville to pursue a career in music.

As a devoted admirer, I had a significant moment in my career when I handed over a tape of my music to June Carter with the intention that it would reach her husband, Johnny Cash – famously known as The Man in Black. To my immense delight, he ended up recording one of my compositions, Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down.

Winning the Songwriter Of The Year award for that tune occurred during the Country Music Association Awards in 1970, which was a result of his efforts.

Over time, the musician composed songs not only for himself but also for other performers. Later on, he gained recognition for his acting performances, particularly in the movie “A Star Is Born.

Among his most memorable movies are Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Blessings (1973, also known as Blume in Love), Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), A Star Is Born (1976), Convoy (1978), Heaven’s Gate (1980), The Stagecoach (1986 remake of Stage Coach), Lone Star (1996), and the Blade series from 1998 to 2004.

The four-time Grammy Award winner was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. 

As the Blade actor pondered over the serene family existence he discovered in Maui, Hawaii, he felt a mix of astonishment and gratitude for how things unfolded so perfectly.

I would never have expected this. Here I am, pondering about how things might have been if they had taken a different course. I never believed I’d make it past thirty. My life could have ended tragically.

It was confirmed by a representative that Kristofferson was with his loved ones when he passed away on Saturday.
