From season 3 episode 2 recap: Fatima's pregnancy takes a disturbing turn

As a devoted fan with years of binge-watching horror series under my belt, I must say that the second episode of From season 3 has left me utterly spellbound. The writers have masterfully crafted a tale that delves deep into the emotional turmoil of its characters while maintaining an eerie, suspenseful atmosphere.

Major spoilers ahead for From season 3 episode 2

In episode 2 of the third season of From, we delve into the shocking events following the gripping finale of the previous episode, which led to the tragic death of Tian-Chen Liu. As word of his passing reverberates through town, residents are left grappling with the devastating aftermath.

As a devoted fan, I can say that the show doesn’t drag out the tension; it swiftly delves into Kenny facing the loss of his last remaining parent. Post our adventure in the woods, Kenny and Jim awaken the next day, having spent the night in those enigmatic log cabins. Their return is filled with satisfaction as they discovered a lake and an abundance of fresh produce, indicating that the town’s hunger issues may soon be alleviated.

Kenny’s happiness doesn’t last long as he notices the seriousness in everyone’s demeanor. Deeply saddened by his mother’s demise, he finds himself constantly recalling the gruesome sight of his father after the monsters attacked, which fills him with sorrow. He wishes to remember his mother differently, so he requests Kristi to prepare her for burial in a respectful manner.

Under Jade’s guidance, Kristi arranges the deceased Tian-Chen’s remains, and the community gathers in the church to pay tribute to her.

After losing both his parents, Kenny finds himself on a destructive path. Caught in the act of filling numerous gas containers, it appears he plans to ignite them inside the tunnels and eliminate the monstrous beings. Exterminate every last one of them, seems to be his intention. However, Boyd steps in, proposing to accompany him before they delve into the darkness. But before they embark on this journey, Boyd unveils a shocking truth about the previous night’s events.

From season 3 episode 2 recap: Fatima's pregnancy takes a disturbing turn

As I didn’t want Kenny to believe I died in solitude, I was compelled to share with him the harrowing ordeal I witnessed as the creatures forced me to watch his mother’s last moments. His response mirrored the heartache anyone would feel under such circumstances. However, at least I could pass on her final words to Kenny before she passed. In Cantonese, Tian-Chen implores me to look after Kenny, “He’ll be all alone now.

As a devoted admirer, I witnessed Kenny succumb to exhaustion, leaving me concerned. However, Boyd managed to persuade him to abandon his burn-out strategy and return to our humble town. Interestingly, this event seems to have ignited Boyd’s subsequent course of action, as he later confided in Ellis that he would require his assistance. His intention is to apprehend one of those mysterious creatures, so we can glean more insights from them.

Outside town, we meet up with Tabitha, who has made her way to Victor’s old home. Since our last encounter, she seems to have fainted in front of Victor’s father, Henry Kavanaugh (Robert Joy). Thus, he has allowed her to rest while keeping a watchful eye on her, always ready with a gun should the need arise.

Henry seeks to understand why Tabitha possesses Victor’s lunch box and where she obtained it, which leads her to disclose her past origins and the whereabouts of her family. Initially, Henry finds her story hard to accept. However, when Tabitha reveals her experiences with visions and attempts to rescue children in a tower, along with newspaper articles about herself and those who remain in Fromville, it makes Henry suspect she might be speaking truthfully. This revelation would imply that Victor, his son, is still alive.

Realizing the truth, Henry leads Tabitha downstairs to unveil a multitude of paintings, these being the work of his wife and Victor’s deceased grandmother, Miranda. It is discovered that Miranda felt “chosen” herself, and would frequently paint scenes depicting a mysterious town.

She referred to it as an elusive location, hidden from all maps, where one could unwittingly get ensnared and never escape. Her artwork often depicted her visions of the town’s diner, the lighthouse, and the peculiar children in white that Tabitha has been observing, hinting at the fact that now Tabitha holds a special role. Henry believes her task is to “rescue the children,” since Miranda couldn’t manage it.

Upon my return to town, this episode finds Ellis and Fatima rejoining the storyline. In the first episode, we learned that Fatima has been battling morning sickness; however, in this installment, it’s clear that her situation is more complex. Strange occurrences with her body are making it difficult for her to eat or even retain her teeth. Confused and unsure of how to help, Ellis seeks advice from Kristi, who is currently preoccupied with Tian-Chen. Despite his reservations, Ellis trusts Marielle to care for Fatima given her background as a pediatric nurse.

As anticipated, Marielle informs Fatima that she’s severely undernourished, yet there’s nothing unusual about her condition at the moment. She suggests Fatima take an elixir to alleviate her stomach issues. Upon their return to Colony House, Fatima proposes that Ellis examine his father, allowing her to rest instead.

At that moment, she observes one of the residents collecting the decaying produce for compost. For some unknown reason, these spoiled vegetables catch Fatima’s attention, and she quickly gathers a few to consume. Yuck. This suggests that the strange town might already be influencing her unborn child in an unfavorable manner.

The third season’s second episode concludes with a solitary scene of Jim inside the house, where the phone rings for the first time. A cryptic voice on the line introduces itself as “Dad? This is Thomas,” referring to the supposedly deceased child of Jim and Tabitha.

Odds & Ends

  • The townsfolk are still very mistrustful of Sarah, but she seems to earn herself a few points back in this episode as she offers Kristi and Jade a dress for Tian-Chen to wear. She says they used to try them on in storage during slow days at the diner.
  • Toward the end of the episode, Julie turns to Sarah for advice. To put it bluntly, her experience under the effect of the music box has changed her and she’s scared of becoming like Sarah.
