As a lifelong Trekkie who’s been navigating the Starship Enterprise of fandom since the original series graced our black-and-white TV screens, I can’t help but feel a sense of disillusionment with the current state of the Star Trek franchise. It’s not just about the shows or their creative direction; it’s about the very soul of a universe that once felt so vibrant, hopeful, and inclusive.
Regardless of whom you speak to, the majority of Star Trek enthusiasts express their disappointment with the overall trajectory of the franchise. They may criticize certain shows for their direction, question the authenticity in others, or dislike the gloomy tone that some writers are pushing to “delve into”, but the consensus is clear: they believe the franchise has strayed from its ideal path.
The fact that Star Trek: Section 31, a show long-anticipated by fans, was condensed into a single, streaming film instead of a full series might not be entirely unjustified. It seems to stem from a general wane in enthusiasm for the Star Trek brand as a whole. While other shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are still managing to attract viewers, they’re the exception rather than the rule.
No other show has been able to pull in viewers, routinely, across 10 weeks. The creative direction needs a shakeup. Now, if we’re moving away from Alex Kurtzman, most people would suggest Jonathan Frakes. That’s not a bad idea, but at 72 years old, exactly how long can you rely on him?
For years, Frakes has been an excellent caretaker of the franchise. However, when handing over the mantle, one hopes it lands on a person who will stick around for another 15 to 20 years. In our opinion, Simon Pegg could be that individual. Why not entrust him with creative control?
Simon Pegg is recognized for playing Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the Kelvin Timeline movie series, yet he’s also acclaimed for his work as a writer. He collaborated on the screenplays for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End, and penned the scripts for Paul and Star Trek: Beyond, to name a few.
Many viewers consider Beyond to be the top movie in the latest Star Trek series, although I personally don’t feel that way, there’s no denying that a lot of fans did enjoy it. If anyone seems to understand what most Star Trek enthusiasts are looking for, it’s Pegg. So, with him leading the creative team might not be such a bad move after all.
