JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette‘s love story was one for the ages.
Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson, the producers behind the new FX series Love Story, have brought the famous romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Bessette Kennedy back into the public eye. The show tells the story of their fast-moving relationship and tragic deaths.
The season, consisting of nine episodes, concludes with the same devastating plane crash that took the lives of the characters. According to an interview with Variety, creators Simpson and Jacobson emphasized the importance of having a meaningful reason for including this tragic event in the show.
On July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister Lauren Bessette were flying to a wedding when their plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Investigators determined the crash was caused by pilot error, as John Jr. was flying in dark and hazy conditions. The wreckage and the bodies of those on board were recovered from the ocean floor five days later.
As the show neared its conclusion, Simpson explained that the plane crash was a major topic of discussion. The creators debated how to depict it, and even whether to show it at all. They wanted to avoid being overly dramatic or turning the event into sensational entertainment. Throughout the season, viewers had grown attached to the characters, making the impending tragedy all the more impactful.
The creators of Love Story aimed to respectfully portray the events of the flight, but wanted to avoid a dramatic or sensational ending, according to Simpson. Research for the show revealed that the three people who died on the flight had no prior warning of the crash; it happened unexpectedly.
As a movie lover, I always get chills when I think about what happened. They realized things weren’t right, and were worried, but it turned out they were completely disoriented – lost as to where they were or how they were moving. Basically, their eyes and ears were sending their brains conflicting information, creating these incredibly misleading sensations. It was instant, and tragically, they never even knew they were going down into the ocean.
After the shocking plane crash, creator Patrick Simpson praised the actors for their performances, saying they powerfully brought the story and the real people it’s based on to life. Sarah Pidgeon plays Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Paul Anthony Kelly is JFK Jr., and Sydney Lemmon portrays Lauren. Constance Zimmer plays their mother, Ann Marie Messina Freeman.
In a conversation with Decider, actress Zimmer discussed portraying a mother facing the potential loss of her children. She explained that she had to avoid letting the show’s eventual outcome influence how she played the character before the plane crash. As she put it, “We actors read scripts and know what’s going to happen, so our job is to not let that show on screen.”
Love Story is available to stream on FX and Hulu, and the season finale aired on March 26.
