As a cinema enthusiast who has seen more films than I can count on both hands, I must say that Top Gun: Maverick has left me utterly astounded. The sequel to one of my favorite movies from my youth, not only met but surpassed my expectations.

On Friday, Tom Cruise unexpectedly showed up for the performance of Top Gun: Maverick in Concert held at the Royal Albert Hall.

The film brings back the characters from the 1986 original, resonating with older audiences through its timeless themes of masculinity and heartwarming camaraderie.

The storyline emphasizes the dynamic bond between Maverick (Cruise) and the son of his late best friend, Goose, while showcasing breathtaking air combat sequences.

2,900 fans were able to see acting legend Tom, aged 62, who was seen on balconies overlooking the crowd below.

Tom presented a striking, well-groomed image; he donned a sleek black two-piece suit, complemented by a neatly tucked white shirt and a black tie.

Following the amazing show, he rose from the balcony, waving with his hands and pointing to his chest as a sign of appreciation.

Afterward, he stepped onto the stage with the skilled orchestra, expressing gratitude towards the artists and greeting countless spectators.

Following his expression of gratitude for turning his dreams into reality, there was a thunderous ovation from his devoted admirers.

As stated on the Royal Albert Hall website, they had the opportunity to watch the Academy Award-winning blockbuster movie with a live performance of an epic score composed by Lorne Balfe, Harold Faltermeyer, Lady Gaga, and Hans Zimmer. This extraordinary music was played simultaneously with the film by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, who were led by Lorne Balfe himself.

The film earned the Hollywood legendĀ his first everĀ $100 million opening weekend.

Additionally, it moved even mature men to tears, as numerous individuals posted emotional accounts of hearing weeping in the theater on social media platforms.

In 2022, during the initial release week of the movie, Glen Powell, the leading actor, expressed on platform X that the film should serve as a “comfortable space for shedding male tears.

He was replying to a post from a user which read: ‘Top Gun: Maverick; shout out to the guy next to me who’s girlfriend made fun of him for crying at the end.’

Many moviegoers hastily took to the comment section, eager to express their shared feelings and provide emotional support online.

On Thursday, I observed that there was an elderly man in front of us who dabbed at his eyes a couple of times.

‘I cried FIVE times. It’s dudes and dads season.’Ā

The man sitting beside me was weeping uncontrollably, and I must admit that I found myself tearing up on several occasions; however, I’m generally not someone who gets emotional easily.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must admit that one moment in Top Gun: Maverick that slightly dampened the experience for me was when my companion, mid-movie, blurted out, “Are you tearing up?” causing quite a few onlookers to turn their gaze towards me.

‘I respectfully asked when it was over, fully knowing he cried. Twice. Let it out, boys. It’s ok.’Ā

No need to fret, mate. The theaters had a lot of pollen, making my eyes run throughout most of the movie. Luckily, it was only indoors that I encountered this problem.

“I brought my children along, and as I was emotionally overcome, they noticed too. Later, they shared with me that many strong individuals around them were also emotional. It really touched my heart – it was an incredible moment.

It came as it was revealed that the 80s hit reboot broke a 15-year-old box office record.

Over the holiday period, the movie was simultaneously shown in a record-breaking 4,732 North American theaters, surpassing the 2019 reboot of The Lion King which had been screened in 4,725 theaters. This marked the broadest release in cinematic history.

Additionally, it holds the position of the second largest premiere of 2022, surpassed only by Marvel’s Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which earned $187.4 million during its opening weekend in May.

In an exciting turn of events, the much-anticipated follow-up film not only arrived but also established a new milestone for Tom Cruise. This iconic action star achieved his initial hundred-million-dollar blockbuster during his impressive 40-year acting journey.

The $156-million tally was more than enough to best the 59-year-old actor’s previous best opening weekend – War of the Worlds’ $64 million back in 2005.Ā

The movie directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously collaborated with Cruise on the 2013 film Oblivion, grossed an impressive $248 million globally during its first weekend in theaters. This figure includes $128 million earned from international markets, despite having a substantial production budget of $170 million.

The film earned $21 million from IMAX theatres alone, boasting rave reviews with 96% on critic aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

As an over-the-moon fan, I can’t help but echo the enthusiasm of fellow cinema enthusiasts who bestowed upon the sequel an exceptionally rare A+ grade on CinemaScore!

It emerged that more than half, approximately 55%, of those purchasing tickets for Top Gun: Maverick were 35 years old and above.

Initially, the plan was for the movie to premiere in June 2020; however, Paramount opted to delay the release until a larger number of viewers could attend.

Chris Aronson, Paramount’s domestic distribution chief, expressed his satisfaction with our choice to persevere. He believes this film will have an extended box office run and attract cinema-goers who haven’t been to theaters in a while.
