Two-time Big Brother winner Reggie Bird cops backlash as she begs Channel Ten to go back on the show amid chronic health issues: ‘Give someone else a shot at the cash mate’

As someone who has followed Reggie Bird’s journey since her first win on Big Brother, it is impossible not to be moved by her resilience and determination. Her chronic health issues, including being legally blind due to retinitis pigmentosa, have not deterred her from living life to the fullest. In fact, she has used her winnings to help pay rent and cover medical expenses, ensuring a stable future for herself and her children.

Previous Big Brother champion Reggie Bird, who is dealing with ongoing health problems, has appealed to Channel Ten via social media, asking for another opportunity to appear on the program.

The previous fish-and-chip shop proprietor, now 50 years old, who bagged $250,000 on Big Brother not just once but twice in 2003 and 2022, recently expressed her delight on Facebook about the show’s network bringing back the long-standing series, which had ended its run in 2024.

Reggie posted, “I’m thrilled! Big Brother is returning to its original station, Channel 10. They’re inviting ordinary Australians, including myself, to participate.

Reggie added: ‘I need a job, Channel 10,’ and posted a laughing emoji.

In response to Reggie’s post, a previous roommate from the reality show commented (before deleting it), saying: “It’s not a money machine. Let someone else have a chance with the cash.

In 2003, when Reggie initially took the series title, the broadcast was handled by Channel Ten. However, the show’s initial run ended in 2008. When Reggie returned to the program in 2022, it aired on Channel Seven instead.

In the year 2023, Seven chose to discontinue the show. Later on, I eagerly welcomed the news when Ten decided to breathe life back into it, introducing fresh hosts and revamping its structure for a modern audience.

On the contrary, a previous Big Brother producer dismissed the idea of Reggie rejoining the series for another round, stating that fresh talent was required instead.

They stated that it wouldn’t be logical to bring her back now, as the show needs time to adjust and establish itself with the latest residents.

I’ve been absolutely captivated by the rollercoaster journey of this ex-Tasmanian, a tale that’s made headlines and filled my newsfeed for quite some time now. From her battles with health issues to her financial hurdles, it’s been an emotional ride following her struggles.

It’s quite remarkable that she reappeared on another channel during a new period and successfully won audience favor for a second victory.

It was mentioned that the situation had changed, and it’s doubtful that Reggie would triumph in the program for a third consecutive time, should she choose to participate again.

A second stay in the Big Brother house might not yield the same positive outcome, given that several of her former housemates have recounted their experiences with her on the Channel Seven series as uninspiring.

2022 saw many former roommates expressing remorse for not holding their fellow housemate accountable during her second stay in the Big Brother house. One contestant even alleged that she spent a significant portion of her time sleeping during the AllStars season.

After triumphing in the 2022 celebrity version of the program, Reggie declared that the winnings would be used to cover their rent, thereby securing a stable living space for herself and her kids.

Reggie’s earnings have additionally taken care of her healthcare costs, given that she has become legally blind following the diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa – an uncommon eye condition characterized by progressive vision loss due to degeneration.

She also has Usher syndrome, a rare genetic disease that affects both hearing and vision.

Reggie shared with News.com.au that she finds her daily existence quite demanding: “Living with retinitis pigmentosa certainly poses challenges, and every day presents new hurdles.

“I need to cherish each day since I only have about nine degrees of sight left through a pinhole, without any peripheral or night vision.

Reggie shared that she’s been struggling with severe depression lately, mainly due to her own health issues and the challenges her son Lucas faces as he lives with cystic fibrosis.
