The Rings of Power star Robert Aramayo (Elrond) explains that surprising kiss (Exclusive)

As a dedicated fan with a profound affection for Middle-earth, I must confess that the latest episode of The Lord of Rings: The Rings of Power left me utterly spellbound, particularly the captivating Siege of Eregion sequence. The emotional intensity and intricate plot twists were reminiscent of the epic battles I used to reenact with my homemade hobbit-sized weapons in my backyard as a child!

In the recently aired episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” events centered around the Siege of Eregion, a significant moment from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth mythology. On one hand, an orc army endangers the elven city. Elrond (portrayed by Robert Aramayo) attempts to broker peace with Adar (Sam Hazeldine), who has captured his friend Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). As they prepare for impending war and fearing for Galadriel’s life, Elrond seeks permission from Adar to bid her farewell. Upon granting this request, he approaches Galadriel, looks deeply into her eyes, and tenderly kisses her.

Many fans were taken aback when they learned that Elrond would eventually marry Celebrían, Galadriel’s daughter, as this meant he was kissing his future mother-in-law. This revelation also surprised actor Robert Aramayo when he first read it in the script, as he expressed to Radio Times. “I too was taken aback when I read that,” he said. “We both were. We had numerous discussions about it and what it signified. We embarked on a journey with it, starting from, ‘What?!’ And then completed the circle to, ‘This is truly intriguing, unexpected, and we can explore this together.’

Apart from my conversation with Benjamin Walker (Gil-galad), I managed to inquire about the kiss scene from Aramayo as well this week. I was curious if the kiss was primarily a ruse for Elrond to pass Galadriel the lockpick she later used, a genuine display of affection, or perhaps a blend of both.

He kissed her as cover, I would go with. There’s a function to it. But it’s also a really heightened moment. And he also thinks that she might die very soon, so it is emotional. And it’s odd, but I think it’s supposed to be odd.

In a conversation with Radio Times, Aramayo elaborated on that notion: “I didn’t perceive any romance there at all. It was more about saying a deeply emotional farewell to someone who means the world to him. He genuinely thinks she’s left…It’s also his last opportunity to get near enough to her to hand over those keys…to set her free. It represents a highly emotional, intense moment.

The Rings of Power felt “a lot of responsibility” to get the Siege of Eregion right

Apart from inquiring about his involvement in the Siege of Eregion – a significant battle scene that he missed out on during season 1 – Aramayo shared his feelings with me. “I experienced immense pressure and a profound sense of responsibility, and I truly desired for it to be something special,” he said. “The Siege of Eregion: it’s a piece of our story, one that is rare in the Second Age [of Middle-earth], so I felt the weight of wanting to do it right. Although we altered its timeline and the way it unfolds to some extent, its essence remains similar. Therefore, I felt that responsibility, and it was what I was most mindful of while working on it.

During this period, Benjamin Walker ensured his team received proper recognition: “Transforming a grassy area deep within the woods into a fortified wall in Eregion, full of debris, devastation, and fire, was incredibly humbling, to put it mildly.

A big thank you goes out to Robert Aramayo and Benjamin Walker for chatting with us! With just one episode remaining, the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is drawing to a close! Don’t miss the final episode next Thursday.
