Scripps News is shutting down, another victim of the TV news business downturn

As a seasoned movie-goer who has witnessed the rise and fall of various media giants, I can’t help but feel a twinge of melancholy as I pen these words about the impending closure of Scripps News. Having spent countless hours glued to my screen, consuming news from all corners of the globe, it’s disheartening to see another promising venture succumb to the harsh realities of the industry.

The media conglomerate E.W. Scripps Company is closing its 24-hour news channel by November 15th, marking one more instance of shrinkage within the television news sector.

On Friday, Adam Symson, CEO of E.W. Scripps, announced to the team that they will be shutting down their news channel, commonly referred to as Scripps News. In total, over 200 positions are set to be cut, as stated in his memo.

Scripps News offered continuous live news coverage and documentaries to both traditional broadcast TV stations and online streaming services like Tubi and Pluto. This free channel could also be accessed on their digital platforms. Originally established as Newsy in 2015, it was initially a cable channel that transformed into a full-service provider for television and streaming platforms by 2021.

According to sources privy to the information, Symson reported an increase in the viewership for the Scripps News channel based in Atlanta. The channel managed to attract a million viewers during its coverage of the September 10 debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump.

However, according to Symson, securing commitments from significant advertisers proved challenging due to the ongoing politically charged atmosphere in America.

Several companies and organizations find it too risky to advertise near national news due to the divisive state of the country, regardless of any reputable claims about a news organization’s impartiality like Scripps. While I strongly oppose this view, it is negatively impacting Scripps News, as well as all other national linear and digital news outlets.

The shutdown serves as evidence of the current challenges facing television news, with viewers increasingly choosing alternatives to traditional TV viewing. Just this week, CBS News announced job cuts for their weekend morning anchor, Jeff Glor, along with several prominent correspondents. In anticipation of the U.S. presidential election in November, CNN and the news divisions of NBC and ABC are all projected to implement substantial staff and wage reductions.

Symson stated that Scripps’ digital platforms will persistently broadcast live news directly from the scene, while also maintaining a reporting squad stationed in Washington to cater to their television stations.

This week, Scripps News was honored with an Emmy Award, adding to the numerous journalism accolades it has received during its two-year tenure. The organization has also collaborated with prominent news outlets such as ProPublica, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times on several significant stories.
