Megalopolis records one of Adam Driver’s lowest-ever Rotten Tomatoes ratings
As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of cinematic masterpieces, I must admit that the hype surrounding Megalopolis had me intrigued. The cast, the concept, the legendary director – it all seemed too good to pass up.
In a recent release, the movie titled “Megalopolis,” featuring Adam Driver, has garnered some of the lowest ratings among his acting portfolio.
In this movie, directed by Francis Ford Coppola with personal fervor, the protagonist, architect Cesar Catilina portrayed by Driver, acquires control over spatial and temporal dimensions. Utilizing his power, he constructs a harmonious society in the city of New Rome, which serves as the story’s backdrop.
Beyond Driver, an impressive ensemble graces the screen for this movie. This group includes Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Schwartzman, and Talia Shire. Notably, Coppola himself wrote the script as well.
After debuting at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Megalopolis has been met with a mix of positive and negative responses so far, earning a 52% approval rating (based on 135 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes – one of the lowest rated films in Driver’s career.

Slant Magazine
If Megalopolis truly signals the end of Francis Ford Coppola’s career as a director, it thrives in this finality, withholding nothing and making no concessions.
Associated Press
Megalopolis isn’t a catastrophe, but it’s not exactly triumphant either. It’s like a wild party overflowing with an abundance of ideas, characters, brilliant and dreadful lines all jumbled together, making it almost impossible to fully comprehend in just one watch, leaving you bewildered.
Washington Post
Is it also an exuberant, optimistic tribute that’s as extravagantly generous as it is wildly imaginative, filled with fervent creativity?” (or simply, “Is it not only a wildly creative and optimistic tribute, but also incredibly imaginative?”)
Globe and Mail
Megalopolis could potentially be Coppola’s lifelong labor of love, a grand endeavor brimming with ambition and creativity. However, it is also a stunningly chaotic masterpiece, equally absurd and genuinely magnificent.
The Independent
In the end, it’s not as catastrophic as it might have been, but it certainly has significant issues and a peculiar character to it.
Little White Lies
An artwork that embodies its message, combining unrestricted creativity, visionary thinking, and a unique blend of contemporary neoclassicism with rhythmic literary improvisation, as if it’s jamming to a lively jazz tune.
Megalopolis is in cinemas on September 27.
