Maika Monroe signs on for The Hand that Rocks the Cradle remake from The Bone Woman director

As a long-time admirer of Maika Monroe’s captivating performances and her undeniable knack for delivering chilling portrayals, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation at her upcoming role in the remake of “The Hand that Rocks the Cradle.” While I’m not entirely convinced a remake is necessary for this timeless psychological thriller, Monroe’s involvement certainly piques my curiosity.

Maika Monroe is now receiving the recognition she truly deserves as one of today’s top actresses and a genuine scream queen. Following her impressive performance in Neon’s hit and critically acclaimed film, “Longlegs,” as FBI agent Lee Harker, Monroe has agreed to take on her next role – a remake of the 1992 classic “The Hand that Rocks the Cradle” produced by 20th Century Studios.

As a fan of Curtis Hanson’s psychological thriller, I don’t know that it needs a remake, but knowing Monroe is attached has piqued my interest. The film’s subject matter would also be fascinating to see through a modern lens.

As reported by Deadline, Monroe has been cast to take on the role originally played by Rebecca De Mornay as Mrs. Mott in the original movie. In the 1992 film, following accusations of sexual assault against her husband (an obstetrician), Mrs. Mott’s husband takes his own life. This unfortunate event leads to the cancellation of their life insurance policy, leaving a heavily pregnant Mrs. Mott with the knowledge that she will lose most of their assets.

Stress leads her to give birth prematurely, tragically losing her child and necessitating an emergency hysterectomy. Upon learning that a woman named Claire Bartel (Annabella Sciorra in the original) was the initial accuser of her husband, she embarks on a quest for vengeance, disguising herself as a nanny to gain access to the Bartel household. The character of Claire has not been recast for the remake yet.

It’s intriguing to observe Monroe stepping into the character of Mrs. Mott since she often portrays leading roles or characters akin to “final girls,” like in “It Follows,” “Longlegs,” and “Significant Other.” This change promises an entertaining shift, as we’re accustomed to seeing her in more heroic roles within horror-thriller films, but now she’ll be portraying the antagonist.

Another exciting element to the remake is that it will be directed by a woman, Michelle Garza Cervera, director of the excellent body horror film Huesera: The Bone Woman, and written by Sanctuary writer Micah Bloomberg.
