Paapa Essiedu and Joe Cole’s violent gangster drama is now on Netflix

As a seasoned gamer who’s dabbled in everything from Grand Theft Auto to Mafia III, I can confidently say that “Gangs of London” is a must-watch for anyone craving an immersive and gritty gangster drama experience. The show’s debut was nothing short of spectacular, with its gripping narrative, top-notch performances, and unapologetic violence that sets it apart from the crowd.

The British gangster series from Sky Atlantic, featuring Paapa Essiedu (from “The Lazarus Project”) and Joe Cole (known for “Peaky Blinders”), can now be streamed on Netflix.

As a gamer, stepping into the virtual world of Gangs of London, I find myself plunged into chaos following the brutal assassination of crime boss Finn Wallace. The once-mighty Wallaces are now in disarray, desperately trying to reclaim their dominance on the treacherous streets of London. The void left by Finn’s demise is swiftly being filled by ruthless adversaries who seize this opportunity to assert their power and claim territories that were once under the Wallace’s control.

In this rendition, Cole portrays Sean, the oldest son of Finn Wallace, who is assigned to strengthen the Wallace business dynasty and reveal his father’s murderer. Meanwhile, Essiedu embodies the character of Alex Dumani, a trusted associate of the Wallaces.

2020 saw the explosive premiere of a gripping new thriller, captivating 2.23 million viewers during its initial week and earning the title as Sky Atlantic’s second-largest debut for an original dramatic series.

2022 saw the release of a second season, and it’s now officially confirmed that there will be a third season. At present, this third season is being actively produced.

The intense level of violence in this show has sparked a variety of responses. A few years back, a critic from Paste remarked that the excessive gore didn’t serve any meaningful purpose and destroyed any interest in the narrative.

Conversely, The Guardian believed that the depicted violence was not random, but instead served as an effective method to make the narrative feel tangible and real.

In a conversation with Metro, the creator Corin Hardy explained the rationale behind the gruesome atmosphere in “Gangs of London.

He stated that it’s inherent to the series’ nature. The storyline takes place within a criminal underworld, where even those involved in gangs are criminals. What makes it intriguing is that we can empathize with the characters since they often portray familial relationships.

He continued: “There’s this quandary of, ‘Can you have a life of family and crime in a big way? Can you make that work?’

Engaging in this endeavor may require making difficult choices, facing moral quandaries, and occasionally finding oneself entangled in situations that could lead to violent confrontations.

I enjoy delving deeply into that topic, cinematically speaking. This approach can be both visually stunning and exhilarating.

Although it can be quite intense or disturbing at moments, the story is driven primarily by its characters, their connections, feelings, and struggle for survival.
