Jessica Alba, Jessica Chastain, and Jane Fonda are among slew of artists urging Governor Gavin Newsom to sign AI safety bill
As a lifestyle expert with over three decades of experience in the entertainment industry, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the most influential figures in Hollywood. In my time, I’ve seen countless technological advancements revolutionize our world and change the way we live, work, and play. However, one area that has always intrigued me is artificial intelligence (AI).
As an ardent supporter, I’m among many who urge California Governor Gavin Newsom to approve the recently proposed AI safety legislation.
A group named Artists for Safe AI has written an open appeal to Governor Newsom, asking him to support Senator Scott Wiener’s bill SB 1047.
Developers like the creators of ChatGPT (OpenAI) must implement multiple safety measures in their AI systems prior to training, a mandate that aligns with two recently signed AI bills by Governor Newsom.
Despite facing opposition from figures like OpenAI and Nancy Pelosi, an open letter in support of the bill has garnered signatures from over 125 artists, including Jessica Alba, Jessica Chastain, and Jane Fonda.
Notable figures such as Pedro Pascal, Shonda Rhimes, Alec Baldwin, JJ Abrams, Mark Ruffalo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, Patrick J. Adams, Ava DuVernay, Rosie O’Donnell, Mark Hamill, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Allison Janney, Judd Apatow, Fran Drescher, Sean Astin, Janelle Monáe, Don Cheadle, Jason Alexander, Mariska Hargitay, Sophia Bush, Connie Britton, Mahershala Ali, Annaleigh Ashford, Alyssa Milano, Rosanna Arquette, John Cho, Jennifer Beals, and Tom Arnold are among those who have added their signatures to the letter.
Artists like Aloe Blacc, The Callous Daoboys, Spencer Compton, and Grimes, who previously dated Elon Musk, the co-founder of OpenAI, before he departed from the company in 2018.
The letter begins, ‘As you well know, some of the most lucrative and powerful companies in the world are currently racing to dominate the enormous business opportunity known as AI. Many of those companies are based in your home state of California.’
Over the past week, you’ve turned two bills into laws, shielding artists’ rights and income from questionable AI practices by major tech firms. We sincerely appreciate this action.
However, at present, there’s an urgent bill on your desk for signing, known as SB 1047 from Senator Wiener, which aims to control and regulate Artificial Intelligence.
The legislation we’re discussing isn’t merely for safeguarding artists; rather, it aims to secure everyone’s interests. Previously, significant dangers posed by artificial intelligence might have seemed like material for science fiction, but now those threats are very real.
Despite wealthy adversaries of SB 1047 labeling these apprehensions as implausible, several prominent engineers, scholars, and policy makers caution otherwise, as implied in another open letter.
‘In a recent open letter in support of SB 1047, over a hundred current and former employees of OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, Meta, and xAI said: “We believe that the most powerful AI models may soon pose severe risks, such as expanded access to biological weapons and cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. It is feasible and appropriate for frontier AI companies to test whether the most powerful AI models can cause severe harms, and for these companies to implement reasonable safeguards against such risks,”‘ the letter added.
As a devoted follower, I can’t help but express my excitement over SB 1047! This bill is exactly what the industry experts have been pleading for, and it has garnered immense support. In fact, it sailed through the California State Senate and Assembly with an overwhelming majority!
As an ardent supporter, I find myself pondering this question: Given that polls indicate 77% approval among Californians for the bill, what could possibly deter our esteemed Governor from giving it legal status?
‘We, your fellow Californians, want to express our support for you, Governor Newsom, as we were the ones who cast our votes in your favor.’
In my perspective, I am emphasizing the importance of being an advocate for all, rather than just a select few. As a lifestyle expert, I firmly believe that every individual’s wellbeing matters and should be prioritized equally, regardless of their status or location, such as in Silicon Valley.
The letter concluded, ‘We fully believe in the dazzling potential of AI to be used for good. But we must also be realistic about the risks. Now is our moment, Governor, for California to set that practical and positive example for all of the United States, as well as the rest of the world.’
