Fans of crime thrillers like
HBO quickly renewed True Detective for a fifth season after the fourth season finished airing. While rumors suggest the new season has been planned for a while, no details about the actors or plot have been revealed. Because of this lack of information, it seems unlikely that season 5 will be released in the near future.
Fans eagerly awaiting the return of the HBO crime thriller have a great new show to watch in the meantime. Netflix recently released a 9-episode thriller that’s similar to True Detective and could quickly become a standout in the genre.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole On Netflix Is The Perfect Show For True Detective Fans
The first season of True Detective is widely considered its best. Although later seasons have been good crime thrillers, none have reached the same level of perfection and impact. Netflix’s Detective Hole, based on the work of Jo Nesbø, isn’t quite as exceptional as that first True Detective season, but it feels similar in many ways.
The new Netflix thriller, adapted from Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole books, features two skilled detectives who frequently clash. Similar to the dynamic between Rust and Marty in True Detective, Harry Hole and Tom Waaler aren’t afraid to use questionable methods to catch criminals, making them more anti-heroic figures.
Like the first season of True Detective, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole hints at supernatural forces without becoming overly fantastical. The main character, much like Rust Cohle, seems to have an almost uncanny understanding of the crime he’s investigating.
Similar to the novel Rust, a scene in Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole features the main detective experiencing a psychedelic trip as part of his investigation. However, Detective Hole differentiates itself by portraying characters who are deeply flawed and unlikeable, giving it a unique feel within the crime fiction genre.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole Is Even More Unforgiving To Its Main Characters Than True Detective
By the end of the first season of True Detective, Rust and Marty begin to find some peace. Even Rust Cohle, who is deeply pessimistic for most of the series, starts to feel more hopeful. However, the characters Harry and Tom in Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole aren’t so lucky – they can’t overcome the errors they’ve made in the past.
Even as they try to overcome their personal struggles, those issues continue to haunt the characters. Tom Waaler, in particular, is depicted as a true antagonist. He differs from Marty and Rust by succumbing to his darker impulses and ultimately betraying Harry Hole.
The series Detective Hole by Jo Nesbø brings Harry Hole’s story to a conclusive end, though at a significant cost to him. The series feels harsher on its characters than True Detective, leaving a lasting impact of loss and consequence.
If Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole Gets Renewed, It Will Not Be An Anthology
Although Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole shares some similarities with True Detective, it won’t be structured as an anthology series like the HBO show. Instead, the Netflix series is based on a book series with over ten novels, providing plenty of material for future seasons.
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Detective Hole likely will return for another season, continuing the story from its first season. This is different from True Detective, which will once again feature a completely new story and characters in season 5, staying true to its anthology format.
