World War Z: Aftermath Free 'Extinction' Update Adds Challenging Extinction Mode, New Mutators, and More

As a seasoned gamer with decades of zombie-slaying experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest Extinction update for World War Z: Aftermath has me more excited than a kid on Halloween night. The new mutators for Challenge Mode and the addition of the Arizona XL map to Challenge Horde Mode are just the cherry on top of an already delicious zombie-killing sundae.

Today, Saber Interactive has launched the complimentary ‘Extinction’ upgrade for World War Z: Aftermath. This update brings in fresh mutators for Challenge Mode, a brand-new appearance for heavy weapons, and an incredibly difficult Extinction Challenge Mode designed to test even the most skilled players.

The recently released Arizona XL map has also been added to Challenge Horde Mode on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC, and there’s a premium Golden Bloom Weapon Skin Pack DLC available for purchase featuring “flashy floral patterns” for the Geist 17MP pistol, Paladin LMG rifle, Keris V10 SMG, BSS-2 shotgun and MAG-5 machine gun. That’ll cost you $4.99/£4.19.

In the latest Extinction Challenge Mode, you’ll encounter more aggressive zombies that are challenging to defeat and can infect you if they touch you. It’s tough to spot allies in the commotion, and death results from a single incapacitation – you can only be revived at checkpoints. Successfully finishing all maps from any rotating episode will earn you rewards such as a heavy weapon skin, 350 blue coins, and 1,000 gold coins.

In this updated Challenge Horde Mode, there are thirteen new mutators such as ‘Grenadier’ (enemies throwing explosives until they are neutralized), ‘Myopia’ (your vision becomes blurred after aiming), ‘Plague Creatures’ (during the wave, a random special zombie and poison cloud appear), ‘Mass Contamination’ (the Booster infects more nearby zombies), ‘Angry Turrets’ (at the start of each wave, all deployed turrets become neutral, posing a threat to both zombies and players), and ‘Enhanced Abilities for All 8 Classes’ (increasing the health and damage output of each class by 50%).

The free Extinction update is out now for World War Z: Aftermath on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC.
