Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 5 recap and ending explained
As a seasoned gamer of life with over 30 years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Only Murders in the Building has become my latest obsession. With each episode, the suspense is thicker than the plot of a classic whodunit novel, and the characters are as intriguing as any RPG NPC.
In the last episode 4 of Only Murders in the Building season 4, an unexpected appearance by Bev Melon from Paramount caught the Only Murder team off guard in Sazz’s trampoline room and she menaced them with a gun. This sudden, startling event left us on tenterhooks. Luckily, episode 5 swiftly follows up on this cliffhanger.
Warning spoilers ahead for Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 5.
Following a brisk and seemingly impromptu prologue featuring the filmmaker of Only Murders, we revisit Sazz’s bouncy castle hideout where Bev has Charles, Mabel, and Oliver cornered with guns… but only until she switches on the lights and recognizes the group.
Bev admits she’s been stressed out recently and regrets pointing the gun at them earlier, explaining it wasn’t loaded. However, she accidentally fired a few shots into the ceiling when she discovered it was loaded after all. She shares that she found the gun in the shed and confesses that even though she didn’t kill Sazz, she suspects someone involved in the movie production might be responsible.
It transpired that Sazz had phoned Bev and left her a message about meeting due to a major issue with the film. The call arrived mere minutes before Sazz passed away, leaving Bev without the opportunity to delve deeper into the matter. This is why she’s now at Sazz’s property: seeking clarification and ensuring the movie doesn’t get cancelled. In a unilateral agreement, she informs Charles, Oliver, and Mabel to identify the culprit, and in return, she promises to protect the film!
Following their new lead
The Murder Investigation Group returns to the apartment, where they connect with Detective Williams to discuss recent advancements in the case and hand over the gun found in Sazz’s trampoline shed for further examination. Charles shares details about a voicemail from Sazz and their theory that the murderer might be connected to the film industry.
As a fervent fan, I express my disappointment, instructing them to tidy up their evidence displays before we part ways. However, prior to our departure, I shatter Oliver’s tranquility by revealing that the enigmatic figure in Loretta’s photographs was none other than Jack Jonk – a man with an Olympic swimming pedigree and a rather scandalous past of romancing his fellow actors.
As an avid fan, I can’t help but share my excitement as the Only Murders team embarks on a fresh investigation. They’re now focusing on the movie production team, hoping to unmask the mysterious individual among them who might have had a motive to halt the film and take the life of our beloved character, Sazz. Mabel and Charles are diligently amassing information, with Charles adding a dash of humor by pretending to be on calls to snap photos of our prime suspects. It’s during this covert operation that they zero in on the movie’s writer, Marshall, who has suddenly become a person of interest.
In a twist of events, Charles, Oliver, and Charles (alias Marshall) go upstairs to talk, but just as they’re about to leave, Bev calls Mabel aside for a brief conversation. Bev reveals that the studio is searching for a new podcast related to their upcoming film, and asks Mabel to share some ideas about her current projects. Struggling to think on her feet, Mabel manages to suggest a few concepts, which shockingly impress Bev. She promises to arrange a meeting between Mabel and the studio’s podcast specialist.
Marshall throws a hitch in Charles’ theory
As a gamer, when my squad finally huddled up to chat with Marshall, he was cooler than a pickle on a hot summer day – he was practically bursting with excitement at being grilled by the Only Murders crew. He swiftly offered his alibi for the night Sazz met his untimely end, and then we flashed our murder board in his face.
After examining the timeline on the board, Marshall brings up a concern with Charles: it’s unlikely that the murder and disposal of Sazz’s body could have been done within 12 minutes as the schedule suggests. Marshall proposes that only someone extremely fit could manage such a task, and with Oliver struggling to cope following Loretta’s situation involving her muscular co-star, he offers to demonstrate the feasibility.
In a bid to show that Charles’s sequence of events was feasible, Oliver ran a trial but it ended up taking more than 30 minutes, which proved unsuccessful. Consequently, Charles acknowledged that his timeline might indeed have been incorrect.
Only Murders season 4 episode 5 ending explained
In a surprising development, Mabel finds a clue while examining photos Charles had taken earlier, revealing that a shoe print found at the movie’s photoshoot matches one from the Dudenoff apartment. This suggests that the killer was likely present in the production offices and might attend the upcoming photoshoot where Charles, along with others, has been invited. This discovery leaves Charles questioning his timeline of Sazz’s murder.
In this scenario, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel move towards a photoshoot location. Mabel requests assistance from Eva Longoria to position unattractive rugs on the photo shoot set for ease of use. Meanwhile, as Mabel is asking Eva for help, Charles accidentally collides with Eugene Levy seated in the makeup chair. An awkward exchange ensues between them, both trying to avoid further contact. It’s during this encounter that Charles realizes they might have encountered two culprits working together.
After sharing his belief that two assassins had acted in tandem, confirming his timeline’s accuracy, Mabel finds a footprint on sticky paper that matches one found in Dudenoff’s apartment. In an unexpected twist, this footprint corresponds to the boots worn by Tawny Brother, a film director. This discovery leaves Mabel pondering whether it was Tawny and her sister Trina who might have been responsible for Sazz’s death.
As she moves towards Tawny, she vanishes from view, and events suddenly escalate. We catch a gunshot ringing out, followed by someone exclaiming “Oh my god, they’ve been shot,” just as the episode concludes.
It seems we’ll have to wait until the sixth episode of “Only Murders in the Building” to discover who got shot.
