Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi set to portray gothic lovers Catherine and Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation
As a lifelong enthusiast of literature and cinema, I must say that the news of Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi playing the lead roles in the new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel “Wuthering Heights” has me absolutely thrilled!
In a fresh movie rendition, actress Margot Robbie and actor Jacob Elordi have been chosen for the main characters in “Wuthering Heights,” Emily Brontë’s timeless novel.
Actress Barbie (age 34), expecting her first child, is set to portray Catherine Earnshaw, while the 27-year-old Saltburn actor will take on the role of Heathcliff, according to Deadline. In simpler terms, Barbie and the Saltburn actor will play the main characters in a production where Barbie will be Catherine Earnshaw, and the Saltburn actor will portray her legendary lover, Heathcliff.
The film will be directed by Emerald Fennell, 38, who also helmed Saltburn.
In the production of the upcoming film, it’s confirmed that Margot’s LuckyChap production company will be involved. Notably, this same company has previously worked on Saltburn and Promising Young Woman, two other films by Emerald.
The film is currently in pre-production, and will shoot in the United Kingdom next year.
No plot details have yet been revealed.
In the latest Chanel No. 5 commercial, Margot and Jacob are featured, having worked together on a short film titled “See You at 5,” which is helmed by director Luca Guadagnino, renowned for his work in Call Me by Your Name.
In a recent conversation with Harper’s Bazaar, Margot praised him by stating, “He’s fantastic. As you mentioned, we collaborated on ‘Saltburn,’ working together in the producer-actor role. Although we haven’t acted alongside each other before, I have observed him on set and off, and let me tell you, he has an amazing aura about him.
‘He’s a movie star—he’s got that charisma. He holds a frame. He’s also really lovely and from the same state that I’m from in Australia. We’re about an hour away from each other, but he’s from Brisbane, and I’m from the Gold Coast.’
Despite the central theme of our movie being that our characters unknowingly encounter each other and fail to connect, working on the promotional efforts for the project made it feel as if we had collaborated seamlessly.
Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, published in 1850, is considered a masterpiece of English literature.
From my perspective as a passionate devotee, the foundational narrative revolves around the Earnshaw family, the Lintrys, and their tumultuous bond with Heathcliff – an orphaned boy taken in by the Earnshaws.
Heathcliff is one of the most infamous and complex romantic heroes in Western literature, known for his brooding nature and obsession with Cathy.
Over time, multiple movie versions of the book have emerged, among which the 1939 one directed by William Wyler stands out, featuring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier in leading roles.
The most recent adaption is the 2011 film by Andrea Arnold, starring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson.
In the latest global sensation, “Barbie” movie, Margot took center stage. This cinematic marvel amassed an impressive box office collection of approximately $1.4 billion worldwide, and it garnered no less than eight Academy Award nominations, among them the prestigious Best Picture title.
Her next project is Kogonada’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, set for release in May.
At present, the Australian woman is eagerly waiting for the birth of her first baby, who is due with her spouse, Tom Ackerley, aged 34.
She and her film producer partner also announced last week that they were producing The Sims movie.
Robbie and Acklerley are producing through their LuckyChap Productions company.
Just as Barbie is known for its long-standing popularity, The Sims also originates from a well-recognized franchise. Its first video game was launched in 2000, and since then, it has been sold over 200 million times globally, earning its place among the most successful video game franchises ever made.
The star has continued to work throughout her pregnancy.
Recently, she appeared radiant in a snug grey gown, gracing the red carpet during a premiere of her latest movie titled “My Old Self” in Los Angeles.
Additionally, she shared her latest professional achievement – a significant milestone in her career. Having represented Chanel as an ambassador for over six years, the woman hailing from Australia has been chosen to be the spokesperson for the renowned French fashion house’s iconic fragrance, Chanel N°5.
Since 2018, she’s represented Chanel, and in 2019, she became the model for Chanel’s Gabrielle fragrance.
Meanwhile Elordi recently portrayed the iconic Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla.
Apart from that, he’s slated to appear in Justin Kurzel’s film “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” and Guillermo del Toro’s production of “Frankenstein.
