Cate Blanchett’s new movie confirms UK release date

As a seasoned gamer of global politics and cinematic satire, I must say that “Rumours” has piqued my interest like no other game of intrigue since the days of “House of Cards.” The prospect of seven major leaders getting lost in the woods after a G7 Summit is not just reminiscent of an epic quest in a role-playing game, but also a reflection of the absurdity and incompetence that often characterizes real-life political affairs.

The upcoming movie featuring Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander, titled “Rumours”, has officially set its release date in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In this darkly humorous film, directed by trio Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, we find ourselves tracking the journey of seven significant political figures who become disoriented and lose their way in the forest after attending a G7 summit gathering.

Before it makes its debut at the 68th BFI London Film Festival next month, the UK and Irish audiences will get a chance to watch it in theaters starting from December 6.

Alongside Blanchett and Vikander, this impressive ensemble cast includes Charles Dance, Roy Dupuis, Denis Ménochet, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rolando Ravello, Takehiro Hira, and Zlatko Burić. The trio of directors are also credited with writing the screenplay.

The storyline, ‘Rumours’, focuses on the seven heads of state from the world’s richest democratic nations as they work towards creating a preliminary declaration about a global emergency at their yearly G7 summit.

“These self-proclaimed leaders show themselves to be inept, facing more and more bizarre challenges as twilight descends and they find themselves isolated in a foggy forest. The narrative unfolds as a strange, dark satire about power and the breakdown of institutions in a world that’s slowly going up in flames.

Since its debut at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May, the movie has been largely praised by critics, earning an 83% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on its initial 29 reviews.

A selection of reviews can be read below:

Slant Magazine

“The film is winningly defined by its peculiar admixture of national pride and self-deprecation.”

Daily Telegraph

In simpler terms, “This overly comedic group movie, featuring the G7 leaders, places them in a low-budget production, making their prestigious roles resemble the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine crew.

Variety

In a witty yet relentless manner, the shortcomings of political speech and ceremonial diplomacy are humorously exposed in the engaging, absurd satire titled Rumours.

The Hollywood Reporter

Occasionally, it seems as if this entire production is a precariously balanced sketch comedy, skillfully tied up by the filmmakers and actors at the end… Similar to great humorous tragedies, Rumours carries a kernel of real-life sadness within its fantastical nature.

Rumours is released in cinemas on October 18 in the US and December 6 in the UK.
