Invincible recently criticized a common issue with Marvel Cinematic Universe productions, but acknowledged there’s some value to it. The show is also known for its clever, self-aware humor. A good example is how Invincible directly addressed the long wait for season 2 – Mark Grayson jokingly discussed animation studio delays while talking to a comic book artist.
While getting significantly darker, the third season of Invincible continued the show’s established trajectory. Now, season 4 promises a huge storyline that will fundamentally change the series, all while still including humor and observations about the broader superhero genre.
As a huge fan of Invincible, I thought season 4, episode 4 felt a little different. It wasn’t really about Invincible as much as a little adventure happening around him, which meant the episode was way funnier than usual. And honestly, there was this one scene that was so clever – it basically called out Marvel for something that’s been bugging me for ages: that weird trend of constantly changing superhero costumes! It was a really smart, funny moment.
Invincible Season 4 Pokes Fun At The MCU’s Weird Helmet Tropes
A common trend in Marvel Cinematic Universe films and shows is characters repeatedly taking their helmets on and off. This happens either with physical helmets, or through the use of nanotech suits that form and retract. It’s become a frequent way to show the actors’ faces, seen with characters like Black Panther, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Spider-Man.
It’s become a common trope in superhero stories, and the show Invincible playfully acknowledges it. In season 4, episode 4, Mark and Damien Darkblood fall down a massive pit, using the time to share several jokes and funny moments.
Mark noticed Damien’s helmet kept repeatedly coming off and reattaching while he was speaking, and he asked why this kept happening. Damien explained that he felt he spoke more clearly without the helmet on, which led Mark to criticize the whole concept of a retractable helmet, pointing out that whoever designed it didn’t think it through.
The scene closes with Mark saying, “It’s super-weird. Like, what problem was this even trying to fix?” He voices a common question among Marvel fans. The ongoing debate about helmets in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become so prevalent that even the show Invincible seems to be playfully referencing it through a casual conversation between characters.
Invincible Also Invokes The “Rule Of Cool”
The scene is especially funny and relatable because of Damien’s explanation for wearing the helmet. He initially tries to justify it with talk of the armor’s protective qualities, but he eventually admits he just thinks the nanotech “looks cool.” Even Mark has to agree after Damien puts it on again, saying, “Alright, yeah, that’s pretty cool.”
Across many types of entertainment, especially fantasy, prioritizing visual appeal over strict logic is common. If something looks cool, it often doesn’t need to make perfect sense. A great example of this is the way technology and equipment are presented. Iron Man quickly creating his suit in Avengers: Infinity War is a perfect illustration of this principle – it’s a fantastic scene even if it isn’t entirely realistic.
We’ve seen impressive tech-based costumes before, like Spider-Man’s Iron Spider suit or the nanotech used in Black Panther. But it’s become a noticeable trend because more and more characters – even those who wouldn’t normally have such advanced gear, like Ant-Man or Spider-Man – are suddenly wearing nanotech suits. This is what’s sparked a conversation about it.
While nanotech-based superhero suits are visually impressive, they’ve become a bit overdone. Fortunately, Invincible acknowledges the appeal of this trend while also pointing out its overuse, offering a balanced perspective.
Invincible’s Calling Out Of Superhero Tropes Will Hopefully Lead To Balance
We can hope this debate will eventually lead to a reasonable outcome. It’s honestly a bit ridiculous that comic book fans are so focused on whether a hero wears a helmet, and how advanced it is. But despite how silly it is, it’s become a surprisingly big topic of discussion.
However, the show Invincible playfully addresses this issue, notably in one episode focusing on the idea of balance. While it might be a stretch to say the show is changing things, hopefully the debate over superhero costumes can find a middle ground – a blend of practical effects and CGI – and ultimately become less of a discussion than it currently is.
