A look back at Paddy McGuinness’ axed TV shows as presenter prepares to launch new series – but will it also face the kiss of death?
As a seasoned observer of the ever-evolving landscape of British television, I must say that Paddy McGuinness has had quite the rollercoaster ride. From his humble beginnings as a lifeguard and fitness instructor to becoming a household name alongside the legendary Peter Kay, it’s safe to say he’s come a long way since Phoenix Nights.
Next week, Paddy McGuinness will be back on your screens with a fresh, new show featuring Chris Harris as co-host.
I’m thrilled to let you know that I’ll be reuniting with my former Top Gear co-host on the BBC for a brand-new, three-part adventure called “Paddy and Chris: On the Open Road.” We can’t wait to hit the highways together!
In their quest to uncover secrets about prolonging lifespan, these duo will encounter some of the healthiest, joyful, and longest-living individuals across the continent, during trips to nations such as Sweden, Switzerland, and Greece.
Nevertheless, Paddy has a history of not always delivering successful shows, as several past productions he was associated with were ultimately cancelled.
Known for his popularity on television, this comedian once held prominent roles in shows like Top Gear, I Can See Your Voice, and Question of Sport, all of which were subsequently canceled, after working alongside fellow comedian Peter Kay to gain fame.
In February 2023, the prime-time Saturday evening slots for shows like Catchpoint and I Can See Your Voice were no longer held by Paddy.
Four years following his departure from ITV, and with the cancellation of his show “Take Me Out” after 11 seasons at the BBC corporation, it occurred.
Following the loss of two key roles on TV, an industry source informed The Sun that this turn of events is likely to be quite devastating for Paddy, who has been steadfast in his allegiance to the BBC ever since parting ways with ITV about four years back.
However, since those dismissals have taken place, it’s safe to say that position is no longer available to him. Consequently, he is probably seeking out fresh opportunities to occupy his time.
His appeal continues to thrive among audiences, who find him authentic and amusing, almost like an old friend visiting. It’s expected that he’ll rebound in some form or another.
Before that, Paddy had become part of the Top Gear team in 2019 alongside Chris Harris and Freddie Flintoff. Unfortunately, the show came to an end following Freddie’s severe injury sustained during filming in December 2022.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the shift in viewership for Question of Sport following Sue Barker’s departure as host in 2021, with Paddy stepping into her shoes. It seems that many fans are missing the charisma and expertise that Sue brought to the table.
From 1997 up until 2021, Sue, who is 66 years old, hosted the BBC sports quiz show. However, starting from 2021, Paddy took over as the host, with the average audience dropping to approximately 850,000 viewers during this season, according to The Sun’s reports.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d share this way: Approximately 4-5 million viewers faithfully followed along with me every week until my departure from the show in 2020. The decision was made by the program’s management to bring in fresh perspectives and revitalize the series.
Given his history, Paddy is likely eager that his upcoming series, airing from September 29, might buck the trend of his problematic productions.
In a sneak peek, the pair are seen surfing, trying out rollercoasters, working out in the woods and even testing cosmetics as they find out how Europeans make the most of their later years.
Initially, Paddy gained fame when he worked together with another renowned comedian from Bolton, Peter Kay, on the show “Phoenix Nights.” Prior to this, he spent over seven years working as both a lifeguard and fitness instructor at a recreation center.
Later, the star rose to prominence alongside Kay in Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere (2004), which led him to commit fully to the world of entertainment.
After Phoenix Nights, the Channel 4 series continued with the actors returning to their characters as bouncers. However, this time, instead of staying put at a local club, they embarked on a journey across Britain, traveling in a motorhome and facing various challenges along the way.
At the same time, Paddy also frequently appeared on television, taking on roles such as a guest host on This Morning and collaborating with comedian Rory McGrath on two seasons of their show titled “Rory and Paddy’s Great British Adventure.
Later, he was given the opportunity to host the main slot on ITV’s Saturday evening program, Take Me Out. This popular show features a solitary man descending from a ‘love lift,’ where he is introduced to a group of 30 women.
As an over-the-moon admirer, I find myself in a captivating scenario where each radiant lady has a beacon shining brightly. My mission is to persuade as many of these enchanting women as possible to keep their beacons aglow for me. Once they’ve granted my request, I’ll have the arduous task of choosing which one truly kindles the fire within my heart.
Once he discovered his perfect companion, they’d arrange a romantic outing to the imaginary haven of Isla Fernando’s, nestled within Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife.
However, the series ended in February 2020 when the producers decided it was time to conclude the show, as they felt it had reached its natural conclusion after a nine-year run on ITV.
According to reports, it was stated back then that since ITV and Paddy have exhausted all possible variations of a dating show, they have collectively decided that it’s now appropriate to bring the show to an end.
