The new Netflix series, Detective Hole, premiered on March 26th and is based on Jo Nesbø’s popular Harry Hole novels. It’s been a hit with critics, earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Detective Hole Set a New Record for Jo Nesbø

This new series has earned a perfect 100% rating, making it the highest-rated adaptation of this author’s work so far. Based on seven reviews, it’s getting off to a fantastic start, though the score could change as more reviews are published.

The release was an immediate success, reaching sixth place in the U.S. and second worldwide within just one day. It hit number one in 18 countries, including the author’s native Norway.

Anita Singh of The Daily Telegraph highlighted that the TV adaptation was written by the original author, ensuring it stayed true to his creative intent and would please fans. M.N. Miller from FandomWire praised Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole as a fantastic example of well-executed Nordic noir.

Karina Adelgaard of Heaven of Horror praised the Netflix production, calling it a visually stunning experience thanks to its excellent casting and captivating Nordic Noir atmosphere.

Jo Nesbø Had Several Adaptations So Far

The author has seen his work adapted for the screen before. Several of his novels have become feature films, and one notable example is the 2017 psychological thriller, The Snowman. The film, based on his 2007 novel of the same title, starred Michael Fassbender alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, and J. K. Simmons.

Despite having a great cast, the movie received very poor reviews because it significantly changed the original story. Critics gave it a dismal 7% rating, and audiences weren’t much kinder, scoring it only 19%. This film, The Snowman, was based on the seventh book in the Harry Hole series. Netflix is now adapting the fifth book, The Devil’s Star, into a new crime drama.

I recently checked out The Hanging Sun, a really atmospheric noir thriller from 2022. It’s a British-Italian co-production based on Jo Nesbø’s novel Midnight Sun from 2015. The cast was fantastic – Sam Spruell, Jessica Brown Findlay, and the always-great Charles Dance all had roles.

One of his early projects was adapting the 2011 Norwegian action film Headhunters. This film, based on the 2008 novel of the same name, starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (known from Game of Thrones), Aksel Hennie (The Martian), and Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarök). Headhunters became Norway’s highest-earning film, earning positive reviews with a 93% approval rating from critics and an 85% audience score.

I was so excited to see Prime Video bring Jo Nesbø’s fantastic short story, The Jealousy Man, to life this year! They turned it into this really cool neo-noir mystery called Killer Heat, and the cast is amazing – Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, and Richard Madden all star in it. I’ve been eagerly awaiting its release!

Several more adaptations are planned, including The Night House, which Jo Nesbø is writing and will feature Jacob Tremblay (known from Doctor Sleep). Another upcoming adaptation is Blood on Snow, with a cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Eva Green, Emma Laird, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole is streaming on Netflix.
