The shockingly low salaries of My Kitchen Rules contestants revealed... as claims emerge the reality stars have to work unpaid overtime

As a passionate fan who has followed My Kitchen Rules for years, I must say I’m utterly disheartened and appalled by the revelations about the contestants’ pay. It seems that the glamour and excitement of being on TV often come at an unjust cost – literally!

Contrary to popular belief, participating in a reality TV show doesn’t usually lead to fame and wealth; quite the contrary, it often results in just the opposite.

Unfortunately, it appears that the most recent group of competitors on the long-standing show My Kitchen Rules are facing this predicament.

A participant from the 2024 season, who chose to remain anonymous, shared with Daily Mail Australia that aspiring television cooks typically earn around $1100 per week, which is just slightly above the minimum wage.

The Australian minimum wage is currently $24.10 per hour, or $915.90 per week based on 38 hours.

For numerous contestants, participating in the reality show resulted in a reduction in pay, with one of them admitting that they finished the filming process at a financial loss.

‘It certainly didn’t cover our usual salaries,’ they claimed.

‘I think one of our cast-mates was in debt after filming.’

Although the program consistently attracts a massive viewership every season, it appears that the contestants’ compensation doesn’t always align with the show’s popularity, as suggested by a casting executive from Seven.

‘A lot of people still think getting on TV will make you rich and famous,’ they said.

‘It doesn’t.’

As someone eagerly anticipating their selection for the show, I can attest that the thrill of being chosen usually surpasses any concerns about modest compensation.

According to the source, by the point when most candidates have reviewed their contract, they are usually so thrilled to have been chosen, they pay little attention to the financial aspects, which is exactly what producers anticipate.

Previously on Masterchef, a contestant shared with Daily Mail Australia that while they were on the program, they were required to work beyond what is typically expected for someone making slightly more than the standard minimum wage.

‘The shoots were longer than we were told and there was no overtime,’ the contestant revealed.

“We didn’t anticipate that we’d have to stay for such a prolonged period. On certain nights, our filming sessions even extended past the night.

A casting executive, going by no specific name, additionally highlighted the significant difference in earnings between reality show hosts and the contestants whose involvement generates audience interest for Australian viewers, compared to their compensation.

‘TV is wild,’ they said.

If you’re the show’s host, you might be earning millions. Contrastingly, if you’re the leading actor, often the focal point of conversations surrounding your series, you could be receiving as little as $70 per day.

Another source disclosed to Now To Love this month that contestants received $1000, however, they were required to cover their own grocery expenses from that sum as a way of learning budgeting skills.

The insider commented, “It’s quite costly. We found ourselves spending around $600 per week on groceries due to the recommendation to cook meals as often as possible.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Channel Seven for comment.

In contrast, while MKR stars allegedly receive minimal pay for their work, the situation appears even more unfair on the Made in Bondi reality series produced by Seven.

An exclusive source shared with Daily Mail Australia that the actors were reportedly earning as low as $70 per day, suggesting they could potentially make more by working at an entry-level wage job.

According to the source, the salaries of the actors on Made In Bondi are more surprising or shocking than the plotlines of the series itself.

‘The core cast are on minimum wage, and I was told that some of the cast were on $70 a day.’

It was reported that one of the participants’ parents were deeply worried that the show might negatively impact their high-society standing, and the low wages offered did not help ease their concerns.

The source continued, ‘If he worked as a busboy, he could potentially earn more. However, it might not be worth the possible damage to the family’s standing.’
