Married At First Sight couple Cam Merchant and Jules Robinson share update on their Northern Beaches property after out-of-control bushfires ripped through the area just metres away from their home

As someone who has lived through numerous bushfire seasons in Australia, this recent event near my home in Sydney’s Northern Beaches has once again brought a familiar sense of unease and concern. The smoke-filled skies and the sight of fires burning in the distance are all too familiar signs of another fire season upon us.

On the Northern Beaches, where they live, Jules Robinson and Cameron Merchant from Married At First Sight Australia have been giving updates about the approaching bushfire that threatens their residence.

People living in the area north of Sydney were advised to be careful, as a controlled fire that was meant to reduce potential hazards escaped its boundaries over the weekend.

On a blustery Saturday, I watched in sheer horror as the flames danced wildly out of control, fueled by the raging elements. But then, like guardian angels, the tireless firefighters and their water-dropping aircraft swooped in, battling against the relenting wind and dropping temperatures to bring the inferno under control.

On Saturday, both Jules (age 42) and Cam (age 40) shared their responses on their Instagram accounts when the fires approached affluent neighborhoods in Sydney.

Cam posted a picture of the smoky sky blocking the sun, mentioning that it’s typically not a positive development.

Both parents shared images of eldest son Oliver, three, helping out as they prepared for the worst.

Jules shared on her Instagram Story a video of their child playing with a sprinkler at the entrance of their Cromer residence.

In this location, we’re under a heightened fire watch. Despite being small, Ollie is acting like a big hero by assisting Daddy. I hope everyone is safe, she wrote along with the picture.

‘Fire over Oxford Falls way. Praying for it to be under control and everyone safe,’ he added.

Later in the day, Cam shared another photo of fires burning in the distance in the evening.

Today has been somewhat anxious. I appreciate those of you who reached out. At the moment, everything is alright, and I’m hoping it will remain so throughout the night. Sending positive vibes to those who are even more immediately affected. (This was written alongside a foreboding picture.)

In the Sydney coastal area, firefighters spent the entire night performing controlled burns near properties, a move that became necessary after residents were suddenly asked to leave their homes due to an approaching fire.

280 firefighters and two water-dropping airplanes were sent to battle a blaze, while residents were instructed to leave the area following a fire warning issued by RFS for 100 Meatworks Avenue in Oxford Falls at 2:39pm on a Saturday afternoon.

As a diligent follower, I found myself confronted by a wildfire classified as ‘uncontrollable’ by the authorities, relentlessly advancing eastward, heading straight for Cromer Heights.

People living at Pinduro Place, Jersey Place, Maybrook Avenue, and Kirrang Street were informed that it was no longer possible for them to evacuate and were advised to find a safe place to shelter instead.

Approximately two hours after the initial report, the Regional Fire Service announced that the fire was starting to subside, leading them to lower the alert status to ‘watch and act’ at 4:43 pm.

People living nearby should be vigilant against flying embers, as these leftover flames from the fire could ignite new fires in the vicinity.

After initially escalating due to a regular controlled burn, the fire situation has now been reduced to an “Advisory” level.

According to the RFS report, firefighters will perform controlled burns at locations near Oxford Falls Road, Lady Penrhyn Drive, Willandra Drive, Maybrook Avenue, and Pinduro Place during the nighttime hours.

So far, no reports of damaged or destroyed properties have been made, yet the Rapid Fire Service (RFS) has indicated that they’ll persist with their efforts to control the fire for several more hours.
