Coleen Rooney opens up about long-distance with husband Wayne after he moved to Devon to manage Plymouth – but she insists it’s ‘easier than Washington’
As a long-time follower of Wayne Rooney’s illustrious football career and his equally impressive personal life, I must say that it’s always a pleasure to witness such a harmonious blend of family and sportsmanship. Coleen Rooney has shared insights on the challenges of maintaining a long-distance relationship with her husband, Wayne Rooney, who recently relocated to Devon for his new role as Plymouth’s team manager.
Previously a soccer player, now aged 38, shifted residence towards the southern region during the summer for a new job opportunity. Meanwhile, despite contemplating a move, Coleen, who is likewise 38 years old, opted to remain in Cheshire and stay put.
In an interview with The Sunday Mirror, Coleen shared that although Devon appears distant, it is surprisingly more accessible compared to Washington D.C., given Wayne’s stint with DC United the previous summer.
She mentioned that they often meet him twice a week, which is great, she added. It’s advantageous that he traveled to America since geographically, it turns out to be more accessible compared to Washington D.C., despite its perceived distance.
‘There’s lots of FaceTime and he always phones when we’re going out of the door in the morning.’
Colleen confessed that she pondered relocating her whole family to Devon alongside Wayne, but eventually chose not to do so because their four sons, all younger than 15 years old, were a factor in her decision.
She mentioned that her eldest son, Kai, will begin his GCSEs this academic year, and his football skills are thriving. Meanwhile, her other boys are comfortably adjusted at school. Consequently, she finds it unjust to relocate them all due to the disruption it might cause.
Last year, Wayne assumed management duties for the Major League Soccer team, DC United. However, it was disclosed earlier that Colleen had expressed to her friends in the past that she dislikes America and has no intention of relocating there.
According to a reliable source familiar with the situation, Wayne was explicitly informed by Colleen that she has no interest in visiting Washington. Previously, she strongly disliked her stay there.
She prefers staying within the North West of England rather than returning to Washington, as her family is currently more contented than they’ve ever been. They have four children who are all attending school, and all of Coleen’s relatives reside nearby.
The source stated, ‘It’s impossible that she would be willing to relinquish everything for the sake of moving to a location she detests.’
Wayne took on the job at Plymouth just four months after being sacked by Birmingham City.
Since then, he’s been handling various tasks, including serving as a pundit for the BBC during Euro 2024 and discussing his past experiences on podcasts.
In May, Rooney and his wife Coleen started looking at houses near the upscale seaside town of Salcombe in Devon, hinting at his upcoming project, which led to speculations then about her possible relocation as well.
As a devoted fan, I can swiftly reach Home Park Stadium in under an hour, since Salcombe lies to the east of Plymouth.
Coleen has been with manager Wayne, a former football player, since their marriage in 2008; they had been together for six years before that.
Together, the couple are thought to be worth a cool £130million.
This pair of individuals are blessed with four sons, who are all young men, and their first-born, named Kai, is mirroring his role model, Wayne. At present, Kai competes for the junior squad at Manchester United, a team where Wayne spent most of his professional years.
