As a child of the 80s and 90s, I can vividly remember the secret language craze that swept through playgrounds across America – pig Latin! So, when I stumbled upon “His Three Daughters” on Netflix, I was immediately intrigued by its unique use of this nostalgic lingo.
In a few scenes of the latest Netflix film titled “His Three Daughters“, you’ll notice the use of “Pig Latin”. Writer-director Azazel Jacobs has provided an explanation for this unique choice.
If you’re not acquainted with it, Pig Latin is a playful language derived from English, where the order of syllables in words is changed, making it difficult for non-initiates to decipher. Kids who wish to converse without adults understanding them frequently use this code, as it seems like nonsense to those not familiar with its rules.
In the film, siblings Katie (played by Carrie Coon) and Christina (portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen) sometimes employ a unique form of speech to converse, indicating the rift between them and their adopted sister Rachel (Natasha Lyonne).

As the three sisters find themselves compelled to reunite due to their ailing father’s condition, dormant resentments resurface and the atmosphere grows tense among them.
During an interview with IndieWire, filmmaker Azazel Jacobs discussed the use of Pig Latin in certain scenes for his film titled “His Three Daughters.
He shared that he didn’t learn this as a child, and later explored various forms of Pig Latin. As for what I typed earlier, it might not be exactly that, but it resembles a playful, nonsensical language – something like a child’s babble. It seemed the most straightforward way to convey a message.

“It was something I’d seen with siblings before but not something I ever had. I wrote it out phonetically and I remember getting a call from both Lizzie and Carrie saying, ‘So how is this actually said?’
In my communication, I merely penned down my thoughts without considering the specific words to use. I simply conveyed the message, trusting that you would decipher it. Remarkably, you managed to grasp it, and by the time you arrived, both of you were proficient at it with remarkable speed.
For the first time, I encountered a sound that seemed alien to my internal thoughts. They seized upon this intuition, adopted it wholeheartedly, and made it their own.
His Three Daughters is now available to watch on Netflix.
