Top 10 Star Trek Moments
Words: Jay Stobie
On September 8th, 1966, the initial (and unofficial) Star Trek Day occurred, with “The Man Trap” launching the series on American television. Although an unaired pilot, “The Cage,” and four other episodes were produced prior to this episode, “The Man Trap” was broadcast first and introduced us to Captain James T. Kirk, Science Officer Spock, and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they investigated a string of strange deaths caused by a creature that drained salt from its victims’ bodies. Fifty-eight years later, the franchise remains vibrant!
The cultural impact of Star Trek was significantly boosted on September 17th, 1976, when NASA revealed their first space shuttle orbiter, which they named the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Initially planned to be called Constitution, this spacecraft sparked a wave of fan petitions urging for its name change in tribute to Captain Kirk’s iconic leadership. This campaign was victorious, and Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, along with stars Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, and Walter Koenig, were all present at the real-life Enterprise’s official unveiling ceremony.

However, I’m delighted to see it’s been added! So, what other moments did Strobie choose? Maybe some of your favorites are among them?
