As a seasoned Trekkie with decades of starship voyaging under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of curiosity about La’an Noonien Singh in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Her enigmatic presence and intricate backstory have left an indelible mark on the series, and her fate remains shrouded in mystery.
As Star Trek: Strange New Worlds approaches the finish line for season three, fans are eagerly anticipating the resolution of the Gorn cliffhanger from season two. However, there’s a minor plot detail that some viewers have taken notice of and are closely monitoring: what becomes of La’an Noonien Singh?
In several episodes of season two, she became the main focus, particularly in the third episode titled “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.” This is when her character travels back to mid-2000s Toronto with the aim of preventing the assassination of Khan Noonein Singh, her ancestor. However, upon returning, she finds herself not alongside the Kirk she was familiar with, but a different one. In this alternate timeline, Khan had not gained power, as Kirk hails from.
In her mission to rescue the tyrant, she develops feelings for Kirk, only for him to meet his demise later on. When time is rewound, so does Kirk return, but without any moments shared with La’an. This detail proves significant in the episode “Subspace Rhapsody”, as La’an confesses her affection for another version of Kirk against the advice of a Temporal Investigations agent, despite knowing that this Kirk is not the one she knew.
This event significantly establishes a key plot development with potential future consequences. Additionally, it hints at a possible predicament for La’an since she appears to be an anomaly in the broader Star Trek timeline as her name doesn’t seem to show up in historical records once the full Star Trek universe unfolds.
Perhaps no one discusses Khan’s ancestor who served in Starfleet because technically she never did. Challenging the Department of Temporal Investigations appears risky, and although it’s unclear whether they could erase someone from existence, we do know that it’s best not to provoke them.
Instead, consider this scenario: Could it be that La’an’s heart is shattered beyond repair, not as a punishment, but rather an unexpected promotion? Perhaps, in her quest for solace from her grief, she is offered and accepts a role within the Department. This move might lessen her influence on the timeline to some extent.
It’s understandable that she wasn’t known beyond the series, nor did she become one of Kirk’s main romantic interests, given her role within the show.
Though, that said, we’ll have to see if Star Trek has a grander story for her going forward.
