As a lifelong Trekkie who’s had the privilege of growing up with the Star Trek universe, I must admit that the ranking of “Shades of Gray” as one of the least favorite episodes has left me somewhat perplexed. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not my go-to episode for a Friday night binge, but it certainly isn’t the disaster some might suggest.
Since its premiere in 1966, Star Trek has broadcast a total of 930 television episodes, and remarkably, it remains a daily watch for fans across every series. It’s rare to find a day where at least one Star Trek episode isn’t being viewed, particularly beloved ones such as “The Visitor” from Deep Space Nine or “The Last Generation” from Picard. Among the 930 episodes, it’s surprising that there aren’t more outright flops.
Some movies might contain sections we can quickly move past as they still offer interesting content. Others, however, we choose not to watch due to their controversial themes like ghost sex scenes. Interestingly, according to IMDb viewers, there’s one movie that ranks so poorly, it seems unlikely anyone would voluntarily rewatch it.
The Next Generation, ranks 3.3 on IMDb. This particular episode has received the lowest scores from viewers in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.
In ‘Shades of Gray,’ Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) spends most of the episode in an unconscious state, allowing us to revisit his memories through clips from different episodes. Given that this was just a season two episode, it seemed as though the show was short on funds for the end of the season and had to make do with what they had available. Despite this, is a 3.3 rating really fitting?
Each series has its highs and lows, with some episodes being more favored than others. The episode “Shades of Gray” might not have introduced anything fresh, but it did include scenes from our preferred episodes. This should have garnered it some positive response. Although it’s not among my top favorites, I wouldn’t categorize it as the worst either. I could rewatch it…if necessary. It’s puzzling to me that among the 929 episodes of Star Trek TV series, this one ranks higher, particularly when compared to the episode about ghostly intimacy.
