Pharrell Williams knocks celebrities who endorse politicians: 'Nobody asked you'

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of exposure to the ever-evolving tapestry of cinema and its influencers, I find myself intrigued by Pharrell Williams‘ approach towards politics. His life experiences have led him down a path that intertwines music, activism, and philanthropy in a unique way, making his political stance an interesting study.

This week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, emphasized the importance of voter registration for the forthcoming US presidential election by releasing a public statement encouraging everyone to exercise their vote, stating that every individual’s opinion is crucial in the process.

Pharrell Williams might be happier if they had just kept their mouths shut.

During a conversation with the Hollywood Reporter just a day after the September 10th debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and ex-President Trump, the versatile musician expressed his frequent frustration with high-profile political endorsements by celebrities.

He mentioned that there are famous individuals he admires who express their opinions, but not every celebrity’s viewpoint is valued by him. He put it simply: “Sometimes I think, ‘Why should they talk? They shouldn’t.’ It doesn’t matter if anyone asked them or not.

Williams’ remarks corresponded with a week containing two significant Tuesdays: the initial presidential debate on one end, and National Voter Registration Day on the other.

At that point, prominent musicians such as Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish expressed their backing for the Democratic duo of Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz. They encouraged their audiences – with Swift being more subtle about it, while Eilish was more direct – to also support this ticket.

“The choice is clear,” Eilish wrote Tuesday on Instagram.

Williams prefers not to engage in political messaging as he stated, “I don’t really get involved with politics.” However, it’s worth noting that he also clarified he wouldn’t support extremist right-wing candidates during elections.

He expressed his preference for keeping a low profile,” he said, describing himself as more of a “compassionate person” than a “protester.

He stated, “I’ll cast my vote based on my convictions. I deeply value both my community and my nation, yet I firmly believe significant efforts are required. I’m all about taking action.

Williams established two nonprofit organizations that focus on equity:

“I’m not an activist, but I believe in action,” Williams said.

Contrary to what some may think, Pharrell Williams, known for “Get Lucky,” publicly endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race and even attended one of her campaign rallies together with Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont.

I don’t claim to be an expert in politics,” he admitted earlier, “However, I am a person, a fellow human being sharing this planet with others. Given how crucial this election is, I felt compelled to participate rather than remain silent.

Two years ago, in 2018, I, as a fan and creator of “Happy,” sent President Trump a cease-and-desist letter. This was after he played my song at a political event, mere hours following a mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue. In the letter, my legal representative stated that there was no sense of joy or happiness about the devastating incident that occurred on Saturday, and no authorization had been given for using this song in such a manner.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that regardless of whether Mr. Williams openly supports a political candidate, production on his Lego-animated biopic titled “Piece by Piece” has been successfully completed. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie is all set for a grand release on October 11th.

Last week, Williams shared his story with The Times, and he opted for the Lego style because he desired a presentation that would be both engaging and comprehensible for children as well.
