Initially, as WandaVision was being broadcasted, fans eagerly anticipated more about Agatha Harkness, the quirky character portrayed by Kathryn Hahn who sang the theme song and was a witch. Now, the wait is over, as we get to continue her tale with Agatha All Along set to premiere on Disney Plus on September 18.

In the three and a half years since the conclusion of “WandaVision,” it’s understandable that some details may have grown hazy for viewers. Here, we delve into the key revelations and transformations that unfolded at the end of “WandaVison,” as well as shedding light on how the Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” has further altered things.

Nosy neighbor Agnes was actually Agatha Harkness

In the final moments of episode 7 of “WandaVision,” titled “Breaking the Fourth Wall,” it became clear that the character Agnes, who had appeared frequently in the sitcom episodes throughout the season, was actually none other than Agatha Harkness. Agatha is a historical figure hailing from Salem during the 17th century, and she possesses considerable magical abilities. After being accused of misusing magic by her coven, she retaliated by draining their powers instead of suffering punishment herself.

In the series WandaVision, she was making efforts to draw nearer to Wanda in order to grasp the mysteries behind the Hex and determine if she could seize her magical abilities. A key aspect of this strategy involved bringing a false Pietro, portrayed by Evan Peters, into the picture, who was intended to uncover Wanda’s hidden truth.

Since Wanda herself couldn’t comprehend, Agatha resorted to using a single strand of Wanda’s hair as a means to traverse her memories. Through this process, she pieced together that Wanda was born a witch, whose powers amplified after contact with the Mind Stone. After losing Vision, Wanda transformed into the Scarlet Witch, a character who controls Chaos magic and is fated to bring about the end of the world.

Wanda beat Agatha and left her in Westview, cursed back into Agnes

Eager to become the strongest witch ever, Agatha proposed a bargain to Wanda: her peaceful life within Westview, in return for her magical abilities. Initially, it appeared as if Wanda was agreeing to this pact, launching a blast of power toward Agatha to be taken in. However, what Wanda was truly doing was drawing symbols to prevent Agatha from utilizing any of her magic, employing a lesson that Agatha herself had once taught her against her.

After being barred from wielding my power, I, the Scarlet Witch, regained control and perhaps even acquired some of Agatha’s prowess. In retaliation for her attempt to seize my magic and harm my offspring, I transformed Agatha into Agnes, confining her within the confines of her own consciousness as a captive. Agatha voiced her belief that one day I would require her assistance, to which I responded that I’d locate her should the need arise.

By a gesture from the Scarlet Witch, Agnes was transformed back into Agatha. However, unlike before, she found herself with no recollection of her past life and devoid of any personal powers.

Westview was freed, and Wanda lost everything

Prior to Agatha and Wanda clashing, Agatha had liberated everyone from the Scarlet Witch’s enchantment. They accused her of tormenting and dominating them, causing Wanda to consider breaking the spell. Yet, dismantling the Hex would mean the erasure of Vision, their children Tommy and Billy Maximoff, from existence.

Following her encounter with Agatha, Wanda spent some time bonding with her family. She and Vision put their sons to bed, bid them goodnight, and in the meantime, she worked on lifting the spell from the town. Once it was fully removed, her home, Vision, and the boys mysteriously vanished.

Spin-off bait galore

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda’s narrative unfolded further, while other characters were strategically positioned for their individual standalone stories.

• Vision had faced off against a reconstructed version of himself known as the White Vision, eventually helping him access his original memories. That version of Vision flew off to find himself in a future project with the placeholder name Vision Quest.

• Darcy Lewis, Jimmy Woo, and Monica Rambeau stopped S.W.O.R.D. director Tyler Hayward from attacking Wanda and her family. In the mid-credit scene for the finale, Jimmy was seen taking charge of the cleanup of Westview. While he directed the FBI, Monica was visited by a Skrull inviting her to join Nick Fury in space. This plotline was explored in The Marvels.

• The rest of town, seemingly, continued on with life as it was before Wanda came to town. Fans can expect to see at least some of those characters in Agatha All Along, although this time they will be shown as their true selves, rather than the characters Wanda made for them.

Billy and Tommy called out to Wanda from the multiverse

In the final scene of the WandaVision series, viewers discovered where Wanda had been spending her time since departing Westview. She was residing in a solitary cabin nestled deep within an isolated area. At first sight, this seemed like a tranquil sanctuary for her to recuperate. However, it was also revealed that she had started delving into the Darkhold, a book known for its corruptive influence on those who wield it.

In her ethereal form, Wanda listened as her kids called out to her for aid, which ultimately led to the series of events portrayed in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness“. Seeking them across different dimensions, she resorted to harnessing the Darkhold’s power.

Spoilers ahead for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Wanda, under the influence of the Darkhold, almost entirely transformed into a villain, clashing with Doctor Strange in an attempt to eliminate America Chavez and seize her power to traverse multiple realities. Yet, she regained consciousness when she witnessed how terrified her counterpart’s children were by her dark persona. This realization prompted her to collapse Wundagore Mountain upon herself, effectively annihilating the Darkhold forever.

As far as we understand, the Wanda Maximoff character viewers have been following since Age of Ultron is now presumably deceased. This significant plot twist for Agatha All Along opens up the opportunity for Agatha to break free from Wanda’s enchantment. Yet, it’s possible that other iterations of the character and her sons, Billy and Tommy, could surface in future storylines.

The storylines of Wanda Maximoff, along with her family, will be further delved into across multiple WandaVision sequels, as there’s always a chance for Wanda to reappear. As the saying goes in comic books, “only characters like Uncle Ben, Bucky, and Jason Todd remain truly dead.” But let me correct myself…

Regardless of whether Wanda appears again, the series Agatha All Along promises an enjoyable journey, boasting a talented cast and equal amounts of genre surprises as its precursor.
