As a longtime admirer of Robin Ince’s comedic genius and emotional vulnerability, this article has struck a chord with me. I find myself deeply moved by Robin’s journey, his struggles, and his resilience. It’s heartbreaking to see how Ricky Gervais’s actions, intended as jokes or not, have had such a profound impact on Robin’s mental health.

A comedy performer named Robin Ince quickly felt apprehensive when he heard Ricky Gervais laugh during a brain test, as shown in an old video that recently resurfaced (approximately 10 years ago).

On Wednesday, Robin asserted that the off-stage jests from comedian Ricky had a detrimental impact on his physical wellbeing during their touring days.

In a recently rediscovered video from 2014, Robin can be seen displaying signs of anxiety, avoiding situations, and having a down mood when he heard Ricky laughing.

In my pursuit, I underwent the process of being equipped with an EEG – a tool designed to capture brain activity – at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability. The purpose was to gauge my neurological responses to diverse auditory cues.

After listening to tunes from his favorite band and the music of his closest friend, which brought about pleasant emotions, Robin’s mood noticeably dipped upon hearing Ricky laugh.

To start with, a tune from Robin’s favorite group, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, was played in the video. This melody triggered the EEG to register that Robin felt drawn to it, or experienced a sense of happiness – also indicating that he was recalling fond memories.

Instead, his brain activity noticeably decreased when he listened to the band he disliked most, Lighthouse Family.

Afterward came the former band of Robin’s friend Brian Cox, D:REAM, where signs showed that he was inclined to dance due to his active response and this desire being detected in his brain.

Ultimately, a sample of Ricky’s laughter was broadcasted to Robin, promptly triggering brain activity in the right frontal region, which suggested feelings of anxiety, evasion, and sadness.

The EEG indicated that he might have been mentally reenacting a physical action, similar to jumping back onto the stage during Ricky’s recording session.

Previously on Wednesday, The Mail disclosed Robin’s assertions about how Ricky allegedly affected his wellbeing as a comedian.

Reflecting on it now, Robin asserts that it was indeed bullying, or so it seems in retrospect. At times, I guess I’ve been quite adept at adapting myself to situations, where one might say, “Gee, this is certainly unusual.

However, those familiar with me found issue with how that relationship functioned. I’m not implying it was a harrowing ordeal, but following a fortnight, I developed a stress rash characterized by red patches, as my physician explained.

‘I think my hair is coming out in clumps.’

On The Starting Line podcast, Robin, aged 55, asserts that Gervais’s behavior, which he describes as bullying, escalated to such a point that Mackenzie Crook, his co-star from The Office, intervened and addressed the issue directly with him.

Robin announced his retirement in 2015, saying he was ‘starting to go mad’ with self-doubt, insomnia and regret over not spending enough time with his family.

As a devoted admirer, I’ve walked side by side with Ricky since the dawn of time (or at least up until 2022). However, when he crossed the line with his transphobic jokes in SuperNature, I found myself compelled to express my disapproval through a heartfelt blog post.

‘It is easy to forget the collateral damage of jokes,’ Robin said.

As a passionate advocate for equality, I can’t help but express my deep concern over the rampant use of transphobic humor that seems to be raking in profits these days. This blindsighted approach overlooks the profoundly dehumanizing impact on an already vulnerable group of individuals who are struggling for recognition and respect.

He then added: ‘I think Ricky believes it is just him being a “naughty boy”.

‘I believe it makes him a pin-up and role model for the alt-Right.’
