3 scariest Star Trek: Voyager episodes to watch just in time for Halloween
As a seasoned gamer and Star Trek aficionado with a soft spot for the chilling and the eerie, I must say that the horror-infused episodes of Star Trek: Voyager have left an indelible mark on my gaming nights. These episodes are not for the faint of heart, but for those who dare to venture into the darker corners of the universe, they offer a unique and thrilling experience.
As autumn approaches and Halloween draws near, we find ourselves in a perfect time to delve into the eerie aspects of Star Trek. Although it often portrays a sci-fi ideal world, Star Trek hasn’t shied away from exploring the unsettling on numerous occasions. In fact, many episodes from the original series could easily be described as nightmare-inducing.
From the Salt Vampire to the fake visage of Balok, the original series knew how to make things uncover. Though, it’d be fair to say that while they went for the strange and at times repugnant (The Devil in the Dark?), they didn’t go full horror. The show in the franchise that embraced that element of storytelling was Star Trek: Voyager.
Voyager frequently plunged into intense terror, doing so quite impressively. As the spooky season of Halloween approaches, we suggest checking out these three series that you might enjoy.
Phage (S1, E5)
The show went right into horror pretty early on with the fifth episode of the series. Titled” Phage”, Trek fans were introduced to the horrifying Vidians, an alien race who tried to play god too many times and ended up creating a disease that eats away at their organs. Disfigured and desperate, the race of aliens now steals organs both internally and externally to live just a little longer. Essentially The Hills Have Eyes of Star Trek.
Revulsion (S4, E5)
Not all Star Trek shows are obvious horror episodes. Case in point Revulsion. It’s a story about a sentient hologram, not unlike The Doctor, who begins to resent the corporeal life forms in the universe and goes out of his way to kill as many as possible. Considering the quick advancement of AI and the concerns therewithin, many are now looking at this episode as a cautionary tale of what could be for many of us.
Night (S5, E1)
Many individuals share a common apprehension towards both the ocean and outer space due to the unknown. It’s this sense of emptiness and isolation that unsettles some of us. In the inaugural episode of season five, Star Trek: Voyager delves into this fear by placing the USS Voyager in a part of space devoid of assistance and visual spectacle. This vast, desolate void is bereft of stars, offering a chilling representation for those who experience a sense of dread while gazing at the sky or looking out to sea. For such individuals, “Night” stands as an exemplary demonstration of terror.
