The mystery drama film The Sense of an Ending, starring Jim Broadbent and Michelle Dockery, is now available on the BBC. Released in 2017, the movie is adapted from the award-winning novel of the same title by Julian Barnes.
The film centers on Tony Webster, a businessman who’s made to revisit his past when he receives a letter and discovers an old diary. This leads him to reconnect with Veronica Ford, his former love, portrayed by Charlotte Rampling (known for her role in Dune).
The movie, which premiered on BBC Four last night, is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer for a month.

Joining Michelle Dockery (known from Downton Abbey), who plays Tony’s daughter Susie, the cast of the film includes Joe Alwyn (The Brutalist), Harriet Walter (Succession), Matthew Goode (Dept Q), and Emily Mortimer (Paddington in Peru). Billy Howle (The Perfect Couple) and Freya Mavor (Industry) portray younger versions of Tony and Veronica.
I saw a couple of comments on IMDb that really stood out. One person called it a genuinely great movie, and another said it was a really fresh take on a pretty tough book to adapt. It sounds promising!
What to Read Next
While The Sense of an Ending isn’t a fast-paced action movie, and that’s okay, its deliberate pace lets you truly appreciate the strong performances from the actors.
One reviewer called the film a “relatable, entertaining, and thought-provoking character drama,” adding that it “has the potential to appeal to all movie fans and offer something to think about, no matter their age or life stage—though what they contemplate will depend on where they are in life.”

Critics generally liked the movie, giving it a ‘Fresh’ rating of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 121 reviews.
Initially appearing as a simple story about family and the past, the film becomes increasingly captivating as it delves into more complex and unsettling themes, according to The Independent. Empire praised it as a beautifully made and well-acted exploration of memory, growing up, and getting older.
However, the second reviewer felt it was a competent but unoriginal take on Julian Barnes’ award-winning novel.
The Sense of an Ending is streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
