Disney makes history with a stunning haul of Emmy Award wins
As a longtime television enthusiast and Disney devotee, I must say that this year’s Emmy Awards have left me utterly astounded! The sheer magnitude of Disney’s triumph at the 2024 ceremony has set a new bar for studio dominance – and I’m not just talking about their towering trophy collection!
At the 2024 Emmy Awards, Disney created history by winning an unprecedented amount of awards in gold! Let’s explore the notable victories that made up this impressive haul!
Every year, the Emmy Awards hold significant importance within television, honoring excellence across network, cable, and streaming platforms. This particular year presents an intriguing twist as two Emmy ceremonies took place for the first time ever. Typically held in September, the 2023 Emmys were pushed back due to Hollywood strikes that hindered actors and writers from promoting their projects. The ceremonies eventually aired in January 2024.
As a devoted viewer, I couldn’t help but be thrilled as the 76th Emmy Awards graced our screens on Sunday, September 15. The night was particularly memorable for Netflix’s captivating series, “Baby Reindeer,” which swept the categories of Best Limited Series, and both acting awards in the male and female categories. Furthermore, HBO’s hilarious show, “Hacks,” claimed the title of Outstanding Comedy Series, with its brilliant star, Jean Smart, adding another Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy award to her collection. What an incredible night for these exceptional productions!
However, it was Disney that reigned supreme at the event, breaking a record with an impressive 60 victories spanning its diverse content platforms (such as ABC, Disney+, FX/Hulu, National Geographic, ESPN, and so forth). This tally is the highest by any studio in a single year and was accompanied by a host of excellent awards. Some notable achievements included…
The Bear
Debate rages about whether FX’s series is truly a comedy, as even Emmy hosts Eugene and Dan Levy made jokes about how it’s more of a drama. Still, the acclaimed series continued its run, winning 11 awards. That was mostly in acting for stars Jeremy Allen White (Outstanding Lead Actor), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Outstanding Supporting Actor), Liza Colón-Zayas (Outstanding Supporting Actress), and Jon Berthenal and Jamie Lee Curtis winning for their guest-star spots. Colon-Zayas made history as the first Latina to take that prize. While it didn’t take the main Comedy Series award, it’s still a good haul for the show.
Shogun
In a surprising turn of events, FX’s interpretation of James Clavell’s novel, set in feudal Japan, emerged as the most triumphant contender. Initially, there was much anticipation that the show would sweep the Limited Series category. However, an unexpected twist occurred when FX announced plans for another season, thereby qualifying it for the Drama series category instead. This strategic move proved fruitful, resulting in a slew of victories, among which was the Outstanding Drama Series award. Consequently, Shogun became the first Disney-produced series to claim that accolade since Lost in 2005.
Hiroyuki Sanada clinched the award for Outstanding Lead Actor, while Anna Sawai made history as the first Asian-descent actor to win Outstanding Lead Actress. After a long career in TV, Néstor Carbonell finally took home his first Emmy in the category of Outstanding Guest Actor. The show amassed a total of 18 Emmys that night, making it the most awarded for direction, visual effects, and various other categories.
Jim Henson Idea Man
Already a multiple award winner, including Oscars, Ron Howard added Emmys to his work with his producing and directing the Disney+ documentary on the beloved creator of the Muppets. It took five awards, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Howard also provided one of the ceremony’s best moments by reuniting with Henry Winkler to mark the 50th anniversary of their TV classic Happy Days.
Some notable winners at Disney’s awards ceremony were:
Thanks to the numerous shows they have produced, Disney was able to receive an impressive number of Emmys, thereby increasing the prestige of their studio.
