Rebooted ’80s BBC crime drama gets first look with The Split star

As a die-hard fan of British detective dramas who’s spent countless hours binge-watching shows from the ’80s and beyond, I must say I’m thoroughly thrilled about the reboot of Bergerac! The original series was a staple of my youth, and I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia seeing those familiar images.

UKTV is rebooting popular ’80s detective drama Bergerac with a new star cast.

For a decade, from 1981 to 1991, the original version of the BBC show featured John Nettles, known for his work on Midsomer Murders, in the main character’s position.

As I step into the shoes of Detective Jim Bergerac for the fresh take on the show, that’s right, I’m Damien Molony from The Split, and today I had the pleasure of sharing some exclusive sneak peeks at my character.

In the upcoming six-part series scheduled for early 2025, Molony will be working alongside ZoĆ« Wanamaker and Philip Glenister, who’s known for his role in Life on Mars.

Instead of following the format of multiple standalone stories per episode like the original Bergerac, the new version centers around a single character-driven murder mystery that unfolds across all six episodes.

The synopsis hints that viewers will encounter Jim Bergerac (played by Molony), a man struggling with sorrow over his late wife and battling alcoholism.

Charlie, Jim’s mother-in-law, expresses worry that he isn’t prioritizing his daughter Kim, and as a wealthy woman from New Jersey is found dead, Jim has to overcome his personal hardships to rediscover his former skills as an effective investigator.

As an old nemesis from his past reappears, Bergerac must rely on his keen detective skills and previous accomplishments to untangle complex family relationships and stay vigilant amidst scrutiny from the authorities, ultimately solving the mystery at hand.

New cast members include Sasha Behar from “Coronation Street,” Pippa Haywood known for “Bodyguard,” Robert Gilbert, who has appeared in “Big Boys” and “Killing Eve,” as well as Timothy Renouf and Celine Arden.

The upcoming series is being penned and overseen by Toby Whithouse, who previously worked on “Being Human”, with further contributions from writers such as Brian Fillis, Catherine Tregenna, and Polly Buckle.

Bergerac is a brand-new U&Original series and will air on U and U&DRAMA in 2025.
