As a lifelong motorsports enthusiast who has witnessed the transformative power of visionary ownership, I am thrilled by Liberty Media’s latest acquisition of MotoGP. Having seen Formula 1 flourish under their stewardship since 2017, I can only imagine the heights they will take this iconic motorcycling series to.
This year, Liberty Media, the present owners of Formula 1, increased their sports car racing investments by acquiring a majority stake in MotoGP.
Liberty Media has allegedly obtained approximately 86% of MotoGP, which equates to around €4.2 billion. This acquisition adds MotoGP to Liberty Media’s existing portfolio, which includes the tracking stock of the Formula 1 Group.
Since Liberty Media acquired Formula 1 back in early 2017, it has experienced significant growth. By placing a greater emphasis on expanding the sport and its global brand, they’ve achieved impressive results. This is evident through the introduction of new racing tracks and increased global recognition for Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton getting involved in MotoGP?
According to reports, seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton is considering buying a MotoGP team, reaching out to Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei about the possibility. However, it’s important to note that Hamilton isn’t the only one expressing interest in MotoGP; Maffei has mentioned receiving inquiries from multiple parties who are keen on getting involved.
MotoGP is currently a strong brand, and Liberty Media aims to expand its influence even more. They aspire to reach the same level of success as they have in developing Formula 1 over the past eight years. One potential strategy could involve promoting the sport globally, which would increase visibility and create additional revenue sources in the long run.
As someone who’s always had a passion for MotoGP, I can tell you that I’ve been keeping tabs on this high-octane sport for quite some time. Back in 2019, there were whispers of a potential collaboration between Yamaha MotoGP and Mercedes, with me being considered for a test run. At the ripe age of 39, I’ve got to admit, the idea of hopping onto a racing bike has been an enticing prospect for me. And let me tell you, I’ve been putting in some serious effort to get ready for that moment.
Acquiring control over a team right now would undeniably prove a smart business decision for Hamilton and other aspiring team owners, considering the promising growth prospects of an already well-liked series.
