Olivia Colman’s “breathtaking” family drama finally lands UK release date

The highly anticipated family drama Jimpa, featuring Olivia Colman and John Lithgow, will be released in the UK soon. The film, which is based on the personal experiences of its co-writer and director Sophie Hyde, has received praise for its acting.

The movie centers around Hannah, a filmmaker played by Olivia Colman, who travels to Amsterdam to see her father, Jim (John Lithgow). She’s surprised when her teenage daughter, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), expresses a desire to live with her grandfather in the Netherlands.

I’ve been so excited ever since I heard about Jimpa premiering at Sundance in 2025, and I was starting to wonder when we in the UK would get to see it! Thankfully, Signature Entertainment just announced it’s coming to digital download on May 11th – I can’t wait!

The movie follows Hannah, a filmmaker, as she journeys to Amsterdam with her non-binary teen, Frances, hoping to rebuild a relationship with her strong-willed and politically active gay father, who they call ‘Jimpa’.

When Frances tells everyone she wants to live in Amsterdam with Jimpa, it brings up old problems for Hannah. She has to deal with Frances becoming more independent, and also face difficult realities about her own history.

The family drama premiered in January 2025 and has received mixed reviews. Currently, it has a 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 55 critic reviews.

According to TheWrap, the film is deeply moving and honest, powerfully affecting viewers and leaving a lasting impression with its beautiful and heartfelt conclusion.

According to Screen Daily, director James Hyde’s latest film is a touching and insightful look at the subtle challenges within families. The performances by Olivia Colman and John Lithgow are particularly strong, though the movie could have been a bit shorter.

Okay, so I was really excited about this movie, but IndieWire wasn’t as impressed. They thought it leaned too heavily on typical indie movie tropes – you know, soft lighting, a really slow and gentle soundtrack – and honestly, they said the family relationships just didn’t make much sense. They ended up finding it more frustrating than insightful, which is a bummer!

Jimpa will be released digitally in the UK on 11 May.
