Jelly Roll divides viewers with his In Memoriam performance at the 2024 Emmys: 'Why was he the choice for this?'

As a long-time television enthusiast who has seen my fair share of award ceremonies, I must say that this year’s Emmy Awards were quite a spectacle! From the unexpected yet well-deserved wins for shows like The Bear and Hacks to the touching tribute to our departed TV family members performed by none other than Jellyroll (I must admit, I had to look him up), it was an evening filled with surprises, emotions, and laughter.

At the 2024 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, Jelly Roll’s In Memoriam tribute sparked debate among fans.

39-year-old rapper performed ‘I Am Not Okay’ at the Peacock Theater, a song that explores mental health issues and emotional distress. Some audience members were perplexed by the performance, while others wondered why he was selected for it, expressing curiosity about his suitability for the theme.

At the event, Jelly provided a heartfelt “moment of healing” for those grieving the loss of storytellers. Accompanied by a group of string players, he began his act with a poignant statement.

‘I believe that music is therapeutic. I believe that music can heal. I also believe that storytelling is just as cathartic. I hope this song can act as a healing moment for those who are mourning the storytellers we have lost this year.’

If you find yourself struggling with feelings of loneliness or confusion tonight, please remember that it’s perfectly normal to have off days.

Next, he crooned the ballad while images of individuals such as producers, scriptwriters, business leaders, technical teams, and entertainers who had recently deceased within the past year were displayed on the screen.

I was reminded of a tribute that honored several well-known figures, among whom were actor Ryan O’Neal, host Phil Donohue, fitness icon Richard Simmons, actress Shannen Doherty, actors Carl Weathers, Donald Sutherland, and James Earl Jones.

Veteran comedian Bob Newhart – who died in July aged 94 – was the final performer shown on screen.

For that particular part, the musician wore a complete black outfit and added a necklace with a cross as an accessory.

Following his performance, fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

‘Why was jellyroll the choice for this?’ someone asked.

“Apologies, but it seems having ‘Jelly Roll’ as the performer for the tribute at the Emmys is reminiscent of a joke from ’30 Rock.’

Someone agreed that it seemed as if ‘a character from 30 Rock, named Jellyroll, was in charge of the tribute.’

“I found the choice of ‘Jelly Roll’ as a tribute performance rather unexpected, it’s not a selection I often come across.

‘Dying only to have jelly roll sing a song about mental health during your in memoriam segment is so cruel,’ someone else chimed in.

Some spectators found Jelly Roll’s facial tattoos to be a distraction, voicing their thoughts as, “Is it possible to see the person beneath those tattoos on Jelly Roll’s face?

Another individual shared a humorous meme, tagged with the comment: “Now let’s take a moment to recall the departed members of the Television Academy… Jelly Roll.” (Informal)

‘Why does jelly roll infiltrate every award ceremony,’ one more commentator asked.

Additionally, there was a humorous meme featuring a polar bear, accompanied by the captioned phrase, “What on earth is a polar bear doing in Arlington, Texas?” The caption itself read, “They’ve got jelly rolls at the Emmys.” This meme humorously compares the unexpected appearance of a polar bear in Texas to the common usage of the term “jelly roll” at the Emmy Awards.

‘I love JellyRoll but this is an odd song choice for an in memoriam. #emmys.’

Others had a more positive reaction to the performance.

I found this gesture very touching, particularly for those of us who have experienced the pain of losing someone. It reminds us of the challenging ordeal faced by those left behind.

One laughing meme had the caption: ‘Me when they announced someone named Jelly Roll was performing the in memorium song. But seriously, dude is fantastic.’

What made me suddenly burst into laughter was the revelation that the deceased singer being honored was Jellyroll, since I’ve never listened to his music before.

Award the Emmy to the voiceover artist who, with no trace of humor, introduces, “Now, honoring our departed TV relatives, we have Jellyroll.

‘”its ok to not always be ok.” thanks for the reminder jellyroll,’ someone else added.

In an unexpected turn of events, “Hacks” triumphed over “The Bear” to claim the prestigious comedy award at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. Meanwhile, “Shogun” dominated across all drama categories.

In the realm of comedies, I couldn’t contain my excitement as I watched HBO’s brilliant series, graced by the talents of Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, steal the spotlight! It outshone the FX series and an incredibly competitive lineup for Outstanding Comedy Series. This illustrious group included Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Reservation Dogs, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, and What We Do in the Shadows. Simply put, it was a comedy battle royale, and our show emerged victorious!

Despite not making it to the highest echelons of comedy, The Bear has already garnered early recognition for its stars, Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas.

33-year-old Brooklyn resident, Jeremy, was awarded a significant accolade yet again in the category of Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series for the second year running.

He emerged victorious against Larry David, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Matt Berry, and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, as well as their respective shows: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Only Murders in the Building (twice), What We Do in the Shadows, and Reservation Dogs.

This time around, the 47-year-old actor from New York, Ebon (known for his role as Richie Jerimovich on the FX series), was once again victorious in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category, similar to Jeremy’s success.

He beat out an impressive field including castmate Lionel Boyce in addition to Paul W. Downs, Hacks, Paul Rudd, Only Murders In The Building, Tyler James Williams, Abbott Elementary, and Bowen Yang, Saturday Night Live.

The accolades continued to pour in for the highly praised series, with Liza Colón-Zayas winning the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

52-year-old New York-born actress and playwright emerged victorious over several well-known figures in the entertainment industry, such as Carol Burnett, Palm Royale, Hannah Einbinder from Hacks, Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and both Sheryl and her Abbott Elementary co-star, as well as Meryl Streep from Only Murders In The Building.

Elizabeth Debicki garnered the highest recognition, Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series, for her portrayal of Princess Diana in The Crown.

In simpler terms, Baby Reindeer swept the awards in its category by winning the prestigious title of “Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series,” as well as garnering three additional major awards. These awards went to Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, and two honors for the leading man.
