As a long-time fan of the Emmys and a connoisseur of pop culture, I must say that the 2023 ceremony was one for the books! The pandemic-era event in 2020, branded as the “Pand-Emmys” by Jimmy Kimmel, was certainly a unique moment in television history. The fact that Zendaya made history at just 24 years old as the youngest Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series winner was nothing short of inspiring.

This year’s Primetime Emmy Awards will be held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, marking the start of their 76th annual ceremony, scheduled for this coming Sunday evening.

The event occurred merely a few months following the long-awaited 2023 ceremony, which happened in January and concluded the 118-day Hollywood actors’ strike that had been prolonged.

This year’s event is being hosted by the pairing of Eugene and Dan Levy, and some of the most prominent celebrities will receive awards or trophies at the gathering.

The Shogun series, immersing viewers in 17th-century Japanese life, leads all television nominees with 25 recognitions, whereas The Bear has shattered comedy records by garnering an unprecedented 23 nominations in a single year.

Over the past few years, we’ve witnessed an array of surprising and unforgettable incidents involving Donald Trump, such as his comedic skits, significant triumphs, and romantic proposals made in public.

Let’s prepare for this year’s big event! Here, TopMob recalls some unforgettable moments that graced our TV screens during the most prestigious award ceremony.

1975: Lucille Ball forgets her glasses

Legendary comedian Lucille Ball brought laughter to the audience in 1975 as she announced the nominees and winner for the Best Comedy category on stage.

An unforeseen issue occurred as Lucille forgot her glasses on her chair, leading her to be unable to read her cue card and consequently disclose the final winner.

Comedian Milton Berle generously volunteered to announce…, bringing immense joy to the laughter-filled and ecstatically amused star-studded crowd.

2001: Ellen DeGeneres mocks Björk

After Björk donned her famous swan dress at the 73rd Academy Awards in March 2001, Ellen DeGeneres chose to replicate the now legendary outfit for the Emmys later that November, with a flair of drama.

Following the delay of the performance from September, due to the 9/11 terrorist incidents, she astonished spectators with her remark: “It’s generally accepted to don swan attire during September. But, is it acceptable to do so afterwards?

2006: Donald Trump sings Greenacres theme song

In 2006, prior to his presidency, an entirely distinct Donald Trump made an appearance at the 58th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Previously, the ex-President wore overalls, held a pitchfork, and sang along with Megan Mullally, who is famously known for her role in Will & Grace, to the tune of the Greenacres theme song.

Back then, Trump served as both host and executive producer for the NBC reality series titled The Apprentice. Remarkably, he recently posted an old clip from the show to celebrate the signing of a farm bill at the White House last year.

2011: Beauty pageant skit

Instead of giving their traditional nod or wry smile when their names were called out as nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy, these women chose to take a unique approach.

As their names were called out, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Martha Plimpton, Edie Falco, and Laura Linney playfully posed as if queuing up for a beauty contest, making exaggerated anxious expressions.

In the play, they tightly gripped each other’s hands. Just before Melissa was announced as the winner, the women put on an exaggerated, humorous display – adorning a flashy crown and a bouquet of flowers, mimicking a traditional pageant celebration.

2014: Robin Williams is memorialised

After his death in August, Robin Williams was honored during the award ceremony held the subsequent month through a moving tribute consisting of clips that left spectators in tears.

After the yearly “In Memory Of” segment, Billy Crystal stepped onto the stage to deliver an affectionate tribute to his lifelong friend Robin.

2015: Viola Davis makes history

At the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards (67th edition), Viola Davis made history by being the first African-American woman to receive the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award, which she earned for her role as Annalise Keating on How To Get Away With Murder.

In a speech that grabbed global attention, the highly respected actress stated, “What truly distinguishes women of color from others is access to opportunities. It’s impossible to receive an Emmy for roles that don’t even exist.

2018: Glenn Weiss gets down on one knee

Once again, making history with an unforgettable gesture, I found myself standing in awe as Glenn Weiss graciously accepted his award for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special. His heartfelt speech left the audience spellbound, not just because of his talent, but because he took the moment to propose live on stage. It was a truly captivating and touching moment that will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most memorable awards show moments ever!

The renowned filmmaker brought joy to fans and his significant other when he spoke to athlete Jan Svendsen, saying: “Perhaps you’re puzzled as to why I don’t refer to you as my girlfriend. It’s because I long to call you my wife.

After that, he knelt down on one knee, took out a ring, and asked the question, to which she enthusiastically agreed, filled with joy.

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the 2020 award ceremony held at Los Angeles’ Staples Center without an audience was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. He nicknamed these awards as the ‘Pand-Emmys.’

For the very first time, winners received their awards while at home, as a means to follow social distancing guidelines.

At the ceremony, Zendaya broke records by becoming the youngest recipient of the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award at age 24, for her exceptional performance in Euphoria.

During the event, they also acknowledged and expressed gratitude towards ordinary individuals who had put in countless hours of work during the pandemic, including healthcare workers like nurses and delivery personnel.

2023: Pedro Pascal gets censored

As a die-hard admirer, I simply couldn’t pass up the chance to tease Succession’s brilliant Kieran Culkin! Before I had the pleasure of announcing the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama award, I just had to give him a good-natured ribbing.

When asked about sporting a sling on his left arm, the charismatic 48-year-old playfully quipped that the dad of two, aged 41, was responsible for his recent mishap.

Before moving on to discuss the nominees for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Pascal, who is 48 years old, took a moment to redirect the conversation to himself. He mentioned that many people have been curious about his arm, and he clarified that it’s actually his shoulder.

He continued: ‘And I think tonight is a perfect time to tell everyone that Kieran Culkin beat the s**t out of me.’

In response, Kieran stared blankly at the camera, before erupting into laughter.

The joke made by Pedro was muted due to its inappropriate language, yet it swiftly spread like wildfire across X (formerly known as Twitter), with fans offering reasons behind the censorship.

2023: Elton John earns EGOT status

Elton John finally scored an EGOT after winning his first Emmy during the 2024 ceremony.

The honor is given to those artists who have achieved a premier accolade across various mediums – TV (Emmy), Music (Grammy), Movies (Oscar) and Theatre (Tony).

19 individuals, together with six more, have achieved the highly coveted super-selective distinction in competitive fields. Additionally, these six individuals were also recognized as EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) winners due to some special honorary accolades.

However, even though Elton achieved an impressive feat, he was unable to attend the ceremony in Los Angeles to receive the award because he needed to recover from a recent knee surgery and couldn’t participate in the show.
