Chappell Roan reveals the purpose behind her white face paint is to rebel against homophobia in her hometown: ‘Like b***h, I’ll show you a clown’
As a fellow artist and LGBTQ+ ally, I admire Chappell Roan’s courage to use her platform to promote acceptance and love. Her story resonates deeply with me, as I too have faced adversity growing up in a small town where being different was not always celebrated.
Chappell Roan has revealed why she often wears heavy white face paint.
On a Friday evening during her Midwest Princess tour in Manchester, the 26-year-old vocalist (fresh from the VMAs performance) openly addressed her audience.
The Willard, Missouri native shared in a now-viral video shared online: ‘Other people in my hometown would call gay people clowns. That’s why I actually wear my white face.’
She emphasized, ‘Like b**ch, I’ll show you a clown.’
Roan, who experienced an intense rise in his music career this year, remarked, ‘This is what matters to me because I recognize you, and I see a community. I truly yearned for this when I was 15. I needed it desperately. Just being in a room filled with people who looked like me was all I craved.’
Audience members enthusiastically cheered for Chappell upon her finishing, expressing gratitude for their presence and emphasizing that they have a sense of belonging here.
On Friday morning, she posted a sneak peek on Instagram of her getting ready process for the MTV Video Music Awards that occurred on Wednesday.
Engaging her nearly five million followers, she wrote, ‘the @vmas with @maccosmetics.’
Roan’s red carpet appearance showcased a gothic-influenced makeup style, characterized by slender eyebrows, deep burgundy eye shadow, and gold mascara applied to the lower lashes.
Her lips were coated in a burnt red shade of matte lipstick.
She switched up the look before she took the stage to perform in a medieval-style suit of armor.
Andria Dahling, the makeup artist, applied vibrant shades such as gold, blue, and magenta, in rich layers, onto the subject’s eyelids.
Chappell went on to win a moon man for Best New Artist at the annual awards show.
In her victory speech, the bold pop artist dedicated her award to those in the LGBTQ+ community who inspire her music, as well as to all the gay individuals who use her songs to express their feelings of love or disdain.
However, the evening wasn’t entirely flawless, for the musician retaliated against a flashbulb-wielding photographer on the red carpet who angrily demanded “quiet down” as she was readjusting her attire.
In footage of the incident Chappell turned and yelled back: ‘YOU shut the f*** up!’
She added: ‘No! Not me, b****!’ prompting one woman who witnessed the encounter to encourage her to ‘Tell him, girl!’
