How ‘End of Oak Street’ and ‘Cloverfield’ Are Related (and How They’re Quite Different)

Recently renamed and with a new trailer, the film The End of Oak Street has sparked fan theories about a possible connection to the Cloverfield movies. The sci-fi film, starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway, begins with a mysterious event: a normal suburban street suddenly appears in a strange, unknown location. While The End of Oak Street is an original story from director David Robert Mitchell, some clues suggest it might secretly be part of a larger franchise, similar to another upcoming 2026 sci-fi film.

The new movie, The End of Oak Street, will be released in theaters on August 14, 2026. It features Maisie Stella, Christian Convery, and P.J. Byrne in the cast.

Is ‘The End of Oak Street’ Secretly in the Same Universe as ‘Cloverfield’?

As a huge fan of the Cloverfield movies, I’ve been following the buzz around The End of Oak Street, and while there’s nothing official linking the two yet, it would totally fit the style of the franchise if they were connected. That’s just how Cloverfield likes to operate – subtly building a bigger universe!

I remember when the first Cloverfield came out in 2008 – it was so mysterious! JJ Abrams produced it, and they filmed it almost like a secret operation, using fake titles and a really clever online campaign. Everyone on the internet was trying to figure out what it was about! It turned out to be a found-footage movie showing a huge monster attacking New York City, and it was awesome.

Eight years after the original Cloverfield film, JJ Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, purchased a script that would become part of the Cloverfield universe as 10 Cloverfield Lane. While not a direct sequel, the new movie shared a similar spirit, focusing on two people sheltering in a basement during an apocalyptic event. Like the first film, it was initially developed under a different name.

To date, the third and final Cloverfield movie is The Cloverfield Paradox. Like the others, it started as an original script and was developed to fit into the Cloververse. The film tries to offer some explanations for the events of the series, focusing on a team of scientists on a space station who accidentally open a gateway to other dimensions, unleashing alien attackers on Earth. The Cloverfield Paradox was unexpectedly released on Netflix the same day it was announced.

A fourth Cloverfield movie was being developed as a more traditional sequel to the original, unlike 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, which used existing scripts. Joe Barton was hired to write the screenplay in 2021, and Babak Anvari was set to direct a year later, but the project seems to have stalled since then.

We’re getting a look at The End of Oak Street, the latest big-budget movie kept under tight wraps. When the first news about the cast came out, Warner Bros. simply called it their “mysterious new film.”

The Cloverfield franchise is known for its unexpected twists, so releasing a movie called The End of Oak Street that appears unrelated, only to later reveal its connection to the Cloverfield universe, would fit with the series’ history of clever marketing.

Although it’s just a theory right now, there are enough similarities between The End of Oak Street and Cloverfield to suggest it could be true.

The Similarities & Differences Between The End of Oak Street and Cloverfield

Similarities

With the official title and first trailer released for The End of Oak Street, it’s becoming clear the film shares similarities with Cloverfield. Both are sci-fi stories centered around everyday people facing incredible, bizarre survival challenges – whether it’s monsters, or in the case of The End of Oak Street, dinosaurs.

The new movie, The End of Oak Street, centers around a strange, unexplained event that suddenly pulls an entire suburban neighborhood away from Earth and drops it into a completely unfamiliar location. The trailer doesn’t show where they end up, but it hints that the place is filled with frightening creatures, possibly from outer space or even the distant past.

The trailer for The End of Oak Street showed a single, large, two-legged creature, but it wasn’t clear enough to determine if it was connected to the monster from Clover or if it was another dinosaur movie.

A key connection between Cloverfield and The End of Oak Street is JJ Abrams; he’s a producer on both projects. Known for directing Star Wars and Star Trek, Abrams has a strong background in science fiction, making him a natural fit for a creative concept like The End of Oak Street. Given his involvement with Cloverfield, it’s possible this new film could also become part of the Cloververse under the Bad Robot banner.

Interestingly, like previous Cloverfield movies, The End of Oak Street was originally going to be called Flowervale Lane.

For fans of the Cloververse, the title immediately suggests a connection to 10 Cloverfield Lane, given the similar words “clover” and “flower.” Was the film originally called The End of Oak Street and then renamed to mislead audiences about its connection to the Cloververse? Or did it change names because it’s actually not part of the Cloververse and wants to distance itself from it?

The story of The End of Oak Street and how the neighborhood ended up in this strange place are full of secrets, which is typical of the Cloververse style. Was the street transported because of the events involving alternate universes in The Cloverfield Paradox?

In the movie The Cloverfield Paradox, there’s a scene where a character browsing social media sees a post reporting that five city blocks have vanished. This hints at the strange events unfolding. Later, in The End of Oak Street, we learn that an entire family’s street and neighborhood were actually displaced during this cosmic event.

Linking this event to the events of The Cloverfield Paradox would be an easy and smart way to tie the two movies together, while still letting The End of Oak Street stand on its own.

As a film buff, I’ve noticed some interesting connections others have pointed out too. The title card for The End of Oak Street really reminds me of the look of the Cloverfield movies. Plus, it’s getting an IMAX release, which is cool because there were originally plans for an unnamed Cloverfield film in IMAX years ago – before it evolved into The Cloverfield Paradox and ended up on Netflix instead. It definitely makes you wonder if there’s a link!

The Cloververse has a knack for choosing talented directors just as their careers are taking off. For example, Matt Reeves directed Cloverfield before becoming known for The Batman, Dan Trachtenberg directed 10 Cloverfield Lane and is now in charge of the Predator films, and Julius Onah directed The Cloverfield Paradox before working on Captain America: Brave New World.

David Robert Mitchell, the director of films like It Follows and Under the Silver Lake, is directing The End of Oak Street. Though those films were successful with specific audiences, Mitchell hasn’t yet become a major Hollywood name. However, he has a distinctive style that could be a great fit for the ‘Cloververse’ if reports are true that this movie is connected to that franchise.

Differences

Although there are hints that The End of Oak Street might be connected to the Cloverfield universe, it’s also possible it exists as a completely separate story.

What sets “The End of Oak Street” apart is its prehistoric setting – it appears to be about dinosaurs, not aliens. While it’s still a mystery how or where Oak Street fits into the story, clues like dinosaur footprints, a lush forest, and a roaring, two-legged creature chasing people in the trailer strongly suggest the film is a dinosaur adventure taking place on an alternate version of Earth.

The Cloververse has already featured aliens – everything from giant monsters to smaller, human-sized parasites – making the current storyline feel inconsistent with what’s come before.

Despite rumors, there’s no official connection between the two films. A key issue is that different studios own them: Paramount made the Cloverfield movies with J.J. Abrams, while The End of Oak Street is a Warner Bros. production. Although Paramount and Warner Bros. may merge in the future, that merger is happening too late to affect The End of Oak Street.

Plus, if The End of Oak Street was actually a secret Cloverfield 4, it would contradict everything we’ve heard about the fourth movie so far – specifically, that it would continue the story directly from the original Cloverfield. The End of Oak Street tells a completely separate story with a new family, and doesn’t seem to have any connection to the characters or events from previous films. This makes it unlikely to be the project originally planned with directors Barton and Anvari.

True to the style of the Cloverfield movies, we likely won’t learn the full story behind The End of Oak Street until it’s released in theaters. At that point, we’ll find out if it’s a completely new story or if it connects to the larger Cloververse with a surprising twist.
