Be warned: this article contains spoilers for the Netflix series Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen! The show concludes with a surprising and disturbing twist that will likely stay with viewers long after it ends. Created by the Duffer Brothers, the series centers on Rachel and Nicky, whose relationship is threatened by a growing sense of unease and mystery.
The week before their wedding, a dangerous curse linked to Nicky’s family comes to light, and everything starts to fall apart. The wedding ceremony quickly turns chaotic and violent, forcing Rachel to face a repeating, tragic pattern. In the final episode, she makes a devastating choice: instead of breaking the curse, she accepts her fate as the next ‘witness.’ This means sacrificing her own life and identity to continue the cycle of tragedy at future weddings, and she’s condemned to endlessly observe these events for years to come.
The final episode of this scary series leaves us wondering what will happen to Rachel, what her last choice really cost her, and how her change will affect her family’s future. Though the ending feels complete, with Rachel vowing to protect the next person in her family, Jude, it also hints at a disturbing continuation that could go on long after the show ends.
Haley Z. Boston, the creator of the show, and stars Morrone and DiMarco recently spoke with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley. They discussed Rachel’s divisive decision, her surprising calm afterward, and how this new path might affect her relationships with Jude and the family she’s turned against.
Haley Boston believes Rachel’s actions were emotionally cleansing. She was concerned viewers might dislike Rachel for essentially condemning the family, and questioned why Rachel felt she needed to sacrifice herself for them. Haley compared it to the ending of the movie Midsommar, where the main character chooses to burn her boyfriend, which she found compelling.
Look, she absolutely has to stay connected to Jude’s family. By agreeing to be a witness, she’s committed to being there for all their big moments, like weddings, over and over again, no matter how much time goes by. I think she’ll find some peace when she steps back, but honestly? She won’t ever be completely free from that obligation.
Haley Boston is destined to attend every wedding in the family. This means Rachel might find herself at Jude’s wedding in twenty years, with Nicky also present, forcing her to face a difficult situation.
It’s established that Rachel will be the key witness, but it’s unclear if she’ll be able to remain impartial given her personal connection to Jude and his family. Actress Morrone expressed curiosity about Rachel’s ultimate decision and how she’ll navigate this situation.
I’m not sure about the idea of keeping an eye on Jude. I’d definitely be interested to see what she does, though – she’s the witness and now seemingly immortal. I think her actions will be a clear signal, and hopefully a better outcome than what the previous witness experienced.
I’m wondering about the abilities some people have to sense things about others. Does it involve a physical sensation? And can those with this ability tell when someone is about to get married?
Even though Rachel appears to be okay with her choice, Nicky is still deeply shaken by everything that’s happened. The final scene with Rachel was a particularly shocking twist. After thinking she was gone, seeing her reappear left him stunned – DiMarco described his reaction as almost paralyzed.
Adam DiMarco believes the character is likely in shock and unable to react, still processing the traumatic events he’s seen. He specifically mentions the character’s final scene with Rachel as being particularly impactful.
Camila Morrone: He’s just a total deadbeat in that scene.
I don’t believe he realizes what’s happening. He probably thinks he’s imagining things, like he’s seeing a ghost or having a hallucination.
Nicky was shocked, unsure if what he was witnessing was real or a dream. He quickly realized the terrifying experience wasn’t finished, but it did confirm one thing: Rachel is his soulmate, now and forever.
Camila Morrone: In his mind, he watched Rachel die, so Rachel should be dead, and then I’m not.
Adam DiMarco feels like he’s in a surreal and terrible situation, almost like a bad dream. The fact that he survived reinforces his belief that Rachel is his true love, showing he’s a dedicated romantic at heart.
