Magda Szubanski reveals big news after her cancer battle

Magda Szubanski has revealed she is working on a new project following her cancer battle.

Kath & Kim’s Miriam Margolyes, 64, is releasing a new memoir called I Can’t Tell You But I Will. The book will detail her experiences grieving her mother and her work advocating for marriage equality in Australia.

‘2017 was the year I finally grew up,’ Magda said in a statement.

My mother was very ill, and at the same time, I unexpectedly found myself caught up in a heated national debate about marriage equality, as Australia held a public survey on same-sex marriage.

Let me tell you, ‘I Can’t Tell You But I Will’ is my story of discovering the hidden forces that really control things. It’s about how I learned to confront them, but more importantly, how I stayed grounded and true to myself and the people I represent throughout it all. It completely changed my perspective on everything.

Magda added that the book would be ‘a eulogy’ for her mother Margaret, who died in 2017, aged 92.

At its heart, this is a tribute to my mother, Margaret. It feels very much like the ancient Celtic tradition of ‘keening’ – a lament, really – as I reflect on the bittersweet experience of loving and caring for someone through their final days. It’s about acknowledging the beauty even within the sadness of loss, honoring her life and the profound connection we shared.

Let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. I started out just trying to make people laugh, but then everything changed. I lost my parents, became totally on my own, and it… it really changed me. I used to believe in simple solutions, you know? Everything was black and white. Now? Now I’m fighting for what I believe in, and I’ve learned that things are messy, complicated, and you have to be tough to get anything done. It’s been a journey from one life to another, honestly.

The book, Magda’s second memoir, is set to hit shelves on September 29.

Magda’s debut memoir, Reckoning, detailed her upbringing and explored the wartime activities of her father, Zbigniew, who worked as a Polish spy during World War II.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always on the lookout for truly exceptional reads, and this book definitely fits the bill! It received incredible recognition, earning a ton of awards – including the prestigious Book of the Year title at the 2016 Australian Book Industry Awards. It’s a real standout!

The news comes after Magda revealed last month that her cancer had gone into remission.

‘I’ve completed chemo and I am now in remission. Phew!’ she said.

This isn’t a cure, but if my cancer goes into remission and stays that way, I’m hoping to manage it for a long time.

I also want to sincerely thank you for all your kindness and support.

Magda shared that the love and support she received from fans during her illness was incredibly helpful, both for her emotional and physical recovery.

‘So eternal gratitude, thank you so much for that,’ she added.

In the same interview, Magda also spoke highly of her healthcare providers and Australia’s medical system, describing it as world-class.

I’m incredibly grateful to our doctors, nurses, and all healthcare workers, and I’m also impressed by how Australians recognize the importance of a strong and caring healthcare system, and appreciate its practical benefits.

Last May, Magda shared on social media that she was fighting a rare cancer called Mantle Cell Lymphoma.

She appeared on camera with a shaved head after beginning her treatment to fight the disease.

Hi everyone. I recently received a diagnosis of a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma, and I’ve already shaved my head in preparation for hair loss, which is expected to happen in the next few weeks.

This is a tough situation, but I’m very lucky to have amazing friends, family, and a fantastic medical team supporting me.

I truly believe Australia, and especially Melbourne, has some of the very best resources and people globally. I feel incredibly lucky to be here.

It can be really difficult to deal with, and it’s intense. However, there’s always promising new research and treatments being developed.

Magda explained she began a treatment plan called the Nordic protocol for her mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). This treatment uses a combination of drugs over five stages to reduce the size of the tumors.
