‘Harry Potter’ series has ‘serious security’ because of racist death threats against Paapa Essiedu

The creators of the “Harry Potter” films anticipated their actors would face negativity and hostility.

This week, HBO executive Casey Bloys revealed the network prepared for negative reactions to the casting of the actors in the upcoming “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” series. Actor Paapa Essiedu, who is Ghanaian-English, recently shared that he’s been subjected to racist abuse and death threats after being cast as Severus Snape.

Speaking to Variety, HBO’s Casey Bloys explained that shows with large, dedicated fanbases often attract strong opinions, which can sometimes lead to negative interactions with the cast. Because of this, the show prepared the actors with training on how to manage social media and handle potentially difficult situations, and also has a dedicated security team in place.

Actor Noma Dumezweni-Essiedu, who plays the beloved Hogwarts professor originally portrayed by Alan Rickman in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies, has spoken out about the racist backlash she’s faced from people who believe the character shouldn’t be played by a Black actor.

He recounted receiving death threats, telling the Times of London that someone explicitly told him to resign or face being murdered. He also described seeing threats on Instagram, including messages vowing to come to his home and kill him.

Essiedu stated that no one should experience this simply for doing their work, and admitted it had been emotionally difficult for him personally.

As a movie critic, I’ve seen this pattern before. Whenever a casting choice deviates from what some fans expect in the Wizarding World, there’s often a backlash. Back in 2016, when Noma Dumezweni, a Black actress, was cast as Hermione in the stage play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” it sparked a similar wave of outrage. It’s unfortunately not a new phenomenon when it comes to adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s work.

This isn’t just happening with the actors in “Harry Potter.” Actors in other popular franchises – like “House of the Dragon,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” “Star Wars,” and the Marvel movies – have also faced racist abuse online.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys explained they expected significant attention on the actors, and that attention could unfortunately lead to negative and hostile reactions.

We explained to the participants what to anticipate, including potential activity on social media and how we manage it. However, security measures are sadly necessary when producing live, original content. We simply aim to be aware of potential issues and keep a close watch on things.

Essiedu also told the Times of London that “the [racist] abuse fuels” him.

He explained that connecting with his childhood self fuels his dedication to the character. Remembering how he used to imagine himself at Hogwarts, he finds it incredibly motivating to see someone like him represented in that world. This gives him the strength to ignore negativity and focus on creating work he’ll be proud of, even when facing harsh criticism.
