As a seasoned music enthusiast with years of listening to various genres under my belt, I can confidently say that this year’s MTV VMAs lineup is nothing short of spectacular! With artists like Form, Rauw Alejandro, LISA, Lenny Kravitz, Anitta, Karol G, LL Cool J and Shawn Mendes gracing the stage, it promises to be a night filled with electrifying performances that will leave us all in awe.

2024 saw Katy Perry maintaining the crowd on their feet during her performance of her most popular songs, culminating in her graciously receiving the prestigious Video Vanguard honor at the MTV Video Music Awards on a Wednesday night.

However, the 39-year-old vocalist, presented by her partner Orlando Bloom, hinted at a tune not included in the main act – the controversial hit “Woman’s World”.

Prior to the launch of her seventh studio album titled 143, a song was unveiled on July 11th. However, it wasn’t well-received as critics panned it and listeners showed little interest, leading the single to reach a lowly position of 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Attendees at the VMAs, held by Megan Thee Stallion at UBS Arena in Long Island, might have anticipated that the new tune would be part of Katy Perry’s retrospective of her musical high points, as it had been hinted during the introduction to her performance.

But even though she performed other hits that were teased in the intro, Woman’s World was conspicuously absent from her medley.

The introduction featured a pre-shot clip of Katy floating off the ground and flying through a cloud-strewn portal past clips from past music videos and performances of her best-known songs.

The video, rich in computer-made visual effects, showcased a portion of her popular song Roar, followed by a massive close-up of Katy’s face filling the entire screen.

Upon opening her eyes, an eerie synthesizer melody accompanied a fragment of the chorus from “Woman’s World” echoed softly: ‘It seems like a woman’s world…you’re fortunate to be alive in it.’

However, with the rhythmic thump of the drum machine echoing, a genuine version of Katy descended from an overhead portal, floating gracefully above the stage on wire supports.

Without a second thought, the whisper of “Woman’s World” vanished from her mind as she shifted focus to execute a segment of her number one single “Dark Horse”, a track from her 2013 album titled “Prism”.

After performing E.T, she reassured everyone that she isn’t scared to experiment with fresh tunes. In fact, she showcased a sneak peek of her forthcoming single, “I’m His, He’s Mine” (featuring Doechii), which is set for release this Friday.

Afterward, she went back to performing her chart-toppers like California Gurls and Teenage Dream. Later, she revisited the song that catapulted her to stardom, titled I Kissed A Girl.

The penultimate song was one of her most popular anthems, Firework.

The contrast between Katy’s decision to exclude Woman’s World and her subsequent performance became even more pronounced when she performed the 143rd track, Lifetimes, to wrap up her Video Vanguard set.

143 songs were added to the album, excluding the lead single, which could indicate that the artist was prepared to move on from that particular song, as it has been heavily criticized.

Host Megan Thee Stallion, a 29-year-old nominee for five awards including ‘Best Collaboration’ and ‘Best Hip-Hop’, introduced Katy Perry’s future spouse Orlando Bloom on stage. Previously, she had won the award for ‘Best Power Anthem’ for Hot Girl Summer.

The evening promises an impressive lineup of renowned music stars, featuring Sabrina Carpenter, Katy Perry, Camila Cabello, GloRilla, Rauw Alejandro, Benson Boone, Halsey, LISA, Lenny Kravitz, Anitta, Karol G, LL Cool J, and Shawn Mendes who will all take the stage.

The MTV VMAs are airing live beginning at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

This year’s recipient of the legendary Video Vanguard Award will be Katy Perry.

According to Bruce Gillmer, who serves as the head of music content for Paramount+ and also holds positions in music, talent, programming, and events at Paramount, Katy is an incredibly talented musician and a significant figure in popular culture.

He noted that with her innovative and captivating ideas, she has garnered worldwide fame and graced some of the largest stages on earth,” (or alternatively) “He pointed out that through her groundbreaking creative perspective, she has become a global sensation and claimed the spotlight at the world’s most prominent venues.

Notable recipients of the Video Vanguard Award in the past are artists like David Bowie, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Pink.

The award comes as Perry prepares to release her upcoming seventh studio album, 143.

I was quite disappointed when my recent single from the Woman’s World album didn’t perform well on the charts after it dropped this past summer.

Regarding awards, Taylor Swift has received a noteworthy 10 nominations at this particular event, making her the most recognized artist.

At age 34, this chart-topping artist stands poised to create a new milestone. If successful, she’ll be the first ever to claim the Video of the Year title five times. Currently, she holds the record for the most Video of the Year wins, with four awards already in her collection.

Her collaboration with Post Malone, the track Fortnight, is up for Video of the Year.

As a devoted fan, I’m hot on Taylor Swift’s heels, trailing behind her by only one nomination, with a total of nine. However, it’s worth noting that the majority of my nominations are for our collaborative efforts.

The only nomination he received without Taylor’s assistance was for Best Collaboration for I Had Some Help, his song with Morgan Wallen.
