Hugh Sheridan clarifies his sexuality as he says he is ‘straight for now’ and was ‘never’ non-binary – three years after coming out as bisexual
As an avid fan of Hugh Sheridan, I must say his journey has been nothing short of intriguing! From his initial Instagram post in 2021 that hinted at bisexuality and non-binary identity, to his recent clarification on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, it’s clear that Hugh is comfortable exploring and expressing himself.
Hugh Sheridan has made it clear about his sexuality, stating that he identifies as heterosexual at the moment and has never identified as non-binary.
In 2021, the Australian actor, aged 38 at the time, appeared to announce his bisexual and non-binary identity on Instagram. However, more recently, he has clarified that he considers himself as ‘straight’, which means being attracted exclusively to the opposite gender.
Hugh, having ended his engagement with Kurt Ackerman and now single, made clear his sexual orientation during an appearance on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, three years following his initial coming-out statement.
2021 saw Hugh expressing his identity as non-binary and bisexual on Instagram, yet he emphasized that he chooses not to be confined by specific labels concerning his sexuality.
Currently conversing with Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O’ Henderson, it appeared that Hugh openly expressed identifying as heterosexual and stated that he has not experienced being non-binary in his personal identity.
People who identify as non-binary do not classify themselves as strictly male or female, instead preferring to use the gender-neutral pronouns “they” and “them.
Hugh clarified to Kyle, “I’m not non-binary; I’m just like you.” (Here, ‘just like you’ implies that there is no difference in their gender identities, although the specific terms used might be different.)
His clarification prompted Kyle to ask: ‘What straight?’ in reference to his own sexuality.
To which Hugh replied: ‘Someone wrote that I was non-binary, yeah I’m straight now.’
Jackie, aged 49, expressed her shock upon asking Hugh once more about his sexual orientation, to which he responded: “At the moment, at the moment.
On the other hand, the actor from Packed to the Rafters later explained that he considers himself ‘open’ and made it clear that he has not identified with any of the letters within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.
I, too, have been hesitant at times to clarify my identity, even though I’ve never claimed to be non-binary. The fear of misconceptions or misunderstandings surrounding my sexuality and gender has often held me back from correcting others, but I am working on finding the courage to set the record straight.
He admitted, with a hint of fear, “I couldn’t bring myself to deny it, for I feared everyone would confront me aggressively.
I’ve never claimed any affiliation with letters of the alphabet; I merely aspired to emulate Kyle and Jackie O.
‘I just wanted to be someone who can be yourself, choose day-to-day.’
Hugh pointed out that it’s quite common for people to evolve, considering it an integral aspect of being human, during our open conversation.
Jackie O might step outside and encounter a woman she deeply admires, yet she doesn’t openly declare her feelings; instead, she remains the composed Jackie O. Similarly, you are simply Kyle. This was his additional comment.
By July 2023, Hugh’s Instagram bio showed ‘he/him’ pronouns, replacing the ‘they/them’ he had used for two years in previous reports. Currently, Hugh does not specify any pronouns in his Instagram bio.
In June 2021, Hugh seemingly referred to himself as bisexual and non-binary in an Instagram post.
Initially, the actor from Packed to the Rafters was planning to marry influencer Kurt Roberts, but they separated about eight months following their announcement of engagement.
At that point, Hugh identified as a human (not specifically binary, bi, or using personal pronouns like ‘he’ or ‘she’, going by ‘Hughman’), yet was in a committed, loving relationship with another human.
He mentioned that he prefers not to identify with specific labels regarding his sexuality, as such identifiers might restrict or confine him in some way.
‘I don’t accept a label cause it limits me… if you want it, take it,’ he continued.
I opted not to use any labels because I feel that exclusion, limitations, and separations are fundamentally interconnected, and this belief runs quite deep within me.
‘And who knows? Why chose? Be you. Be true. Be free to BE, to JUST BE… you, a human, same as me.’
Previously, Hugh shared openly about his sexual orientation in a conversation with the gay-focused publication DNA. He declared that he was at ease with others referring to him as “gay”.
‘Now I’m marrying a guy you can call me gay,’ Hugh explained to the magazine.
Regardless, the essential thing here is that we’re all people, and for me, being labeled has been like being confined within a restrictive boundary or space.
Hugh also told Stellar magazine: ‘I believe labels are for clothes, not for people.’
Additionally, he mentioned that he felt compelled to advocate for individuals who do not identify with specific labels, as he spoke about his own fluid identity.
In early 2021, my journey with the charismatic TikTok sensation, Kurt, began to unfold. The spark between us was ignited when we shared a heartfelt kiss amidst the waves at Bondi Beach.
Later on, I proudly shared with the world that I had brought Kurt into my circle, and we were happily sharing a life together in my residence at Bondi.
In the span of only three short months together, the couple publicly declared their plans to wed, with Hugh expressing his identity as a non-binary and bisexual individual in a subsequent social media post.
After being engaged for eight months, Hugh stunned everyone with a surprising announcement in November 2021 that he and his partner had parted ways. Currently, the actor is unattached.
In the heart of this vibrant year, I found myself standing tall, waving the symbol of unity – the rainbow flag – during the enchanting Mardi Gras parade in Sydney. Underneath, I donned a shirt boldly proclaiming, “Heard and Trusted.” It was a moment of pride, solidarity, and advocacy for all.
The Kyle & Jackie O Show can be heard from 6am to 10am on KIIS 1065 in Sydney and KIIS 101.1 in Melbourne, or listen on the iHeartRadio App.
