Fool Me Once and Marcella stars’ 2018 ITV drama is now on Netflix
As a gamer with a heart for social issues and a deep appreciation for authentic storytelling, I can’t help but be thrilled about the arrival of “Butterfly” on Netflix. Having grown up in an era where trans representation was often limited to caricatures or stereotypes, it’s refreshing to see a series that tackles this topic with sensitivity, honesty, and respect.
The ITV drama titled “Butterfly,” featuring Emmett J Scanlan from “Fool Me Once” and Anna Friel of “Marcella,” is now accessible on Netflix.
As a gamer speaking about myself, I’d say: In this captivating three-part journey, I find myself stepping into the shoes of 11-year-old Maxine, a character who embarks on self-discovery and uncovers her identity as a transgender girl. Alongside her, Scanlan and Friel beautifully portray my separated parents, grappling with understanding and acceptance as they support my transition.
Netflix has now released the show on the streaming service for users to watch.
Six years ago, Butterfly garnered widespread acclaim upon its release, earning accolades not only from audiences but also from critics. In particular, The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan described it as “honest, stunningly beautiful, and powerfully moving.
Sean O’Grady from The Independent praised the drama as “outstanding” and called it a “significant ITV production”, while Gabriel Tate from The Telegraph noted that it was a thoughtful attempt to counteract careless stereotypes or hasty judgments.
The butterfly film was well-received by the transgender community, as Ash Palmisciano (star of Emmerdale as Matty Barton) expressed in Radio Times: “It’s honest, grim, heart-wrenching, breathtakingly beautiful, and an odyssey that leaves viewers with no option but to join the journey.
This tale resonates deeply with any parent eager for their child’s happiness. I can’t wait for people to catch a glimpse of the genuine insights we’ve gained about the challenges and joys that Maxine and her family face as they start on this adventure.
In many forms of media, trans individuals are underrepresented or misrepresented. However, the series “Butterfly” stands out as one of the rare exceptions that accurately depicts the experiences and challenges faced by trans people, according to artist and trans activist, Fox Fisher.
Hoping that this series can help portray transgender issues as human experiences rather than a source of controversy or fear, especially amidst increasing misunderstandings and negativity in today’s media landscape concerning transgender children.
During a screening of the program, Paris Lees, an author and transgender activist, expressed that when they were growing up, every time they saw a trans person on television, they were often portrayed as an object of derision, sympathy, or contempt.
It was truly disheartening whenever I encountered someone similar to myself not depicted in a favorable light. I firmly believe that this instance may mark a significant improvement for the transgender community in years.
